The Dept. of Marine and Fisheries was established in 1867. Under the direction of the Minister of Marine of Fisheries, there were two branches each headed by a deputy minister: one for marine and one for fisheries. The department was responsible for (1) the management of lighthouses and beacons, (2) the management of harbours and harbour masters, (3) piers, wharves and breakwaters and the collections of tolls in collection therewith, (4) steamships and vessels belonging to Canada, (5) river and harbour police, and life boat service and inquiries into shipwrecks (6) inspections of steamboats, examination of masters and mates, and registration and measurement of shipping, (7) meteorological and magnetic services, tidal observations, and climatology of Canada, (8) hydrographic surveys, (9) sea, coast and inland fisheries and management, regulation and pretection thereof. In 1930, the Dept of Marine and Fisheries was split to form the Dept. of Fisheries and the Dept. of Marine.

The series consists of Central Registry records, ca. 1895-1914, relating to British Columbia (part of National Archives of Canada RG 23/B/1. The collection consists of files from the Dept. of Marine and Fisheries Central Registry records held by the NAC filmed for the University of B.C. library and contains material relating to the development and administration of fisheries in British Columbia.
