Biographical history

The 1901 Fisheries Act established an office led by the Commissioner of Fisheries (SBC 1901, c. 25). This office functioned as as branch of the Department of the Attorney-General. In 1947 this became the Provincial Dept. of Fisheries when it became a separate department headed by its own Minister (SBC 1947, c. 36).

Custodial history

The films were taken home by George Alexander and were donated to the British Columbia Archives in 1980 by his daughter, Miss T.J. Alexander.

Scope and content

The series consists of nine reels of film created by the Provincial Fisheries Dept. under the guidance of Deputy Minister George J. Alexander. The series includes the film "British Columbia Salmon from Sea to Can", as well as unedited film footage and out-takes showing aspects of the B.C. fishing industry. The series also includes an unrelated 1939 newsreel.
