Biographical history
Dorothy Georgina MacKinnon (Willis) was born and educated in London, Ontario. She moved to British Columbia in 1948 and married Graham MacKinnon around 1952. She retired from business in 1957 and began a long career as a volunteer in many community oriented groups including the YWCA, the Provincial Council of Women, United Nations Association, Human Rights Council and Women's Canadian Club. While in Montserrat from 1965 to 1967 she was the founder and president of the 17th YWCA in the Caribbean. Upon returning to Canada, she became interested in UNICEF and in 1968 she organized UNICEF BC which was based in Vancouver. She served as chairman from 1969 to 1973 and was elected National President from 1973 to 1976. She received the Order of Canada in 1980. She continued with her volunteer work in various areas until she lost her sight in 1996. She died at UBC hospital in Vancouver on November 7, 2000.
Custodial history
Accessions 87-002 and 90-9609 (199009-008 and Tape4392) were donated to the City of Vancouver Archives by Dorothy MacKinnon. These were transferred to the BC Archives in 1987 and 1990. Accession 94-0999 was left to the BC Archives through Dorothy MacKinnon's will and were deposited in 2002 by her widower Graham MacKinnon.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of the records of Dorothy MacKinnon relating to her work with the British Columbia UNICEF Committee and the Canadian UNICEF Committee. The records date from 1969 to 1998 and include correspondence, executive and AGM minutes, clippings, BC UNICEF Committee annual reports, Canadian UNICEF Committee annual reports, BC newsletter and speaking notes. The fonds also includes an interview with Dorothy MacKinnon about the founding of the BC UNICEF Committee on cassette and 82 photographs of UNICEF activities taken by Noreen Bullock.
