East Kootenay history : D.A. MacDonald, Alex and Elizabeth Ritchie, 1962

RECORDED: Cranbrook (B.C.), 1962-12-09 SUMMARY: An oral history interview about early days in the East Kootenay region. Begins with D.A. MacDonald giving a brief chronological outline of key events in the region leading up to settlement in the 1890s. This is followed by an interview with Alex and Elizabeth Ritchie, who settled in the area in the 1890s. The Ritchies were residents of Windermere and Cranbrook.

Kootenay east

The item is a video copy of a travelogue from 1944-1945. It shows Revelstoke to Golden over the Big Bend Highway, and south to the U.S. border and Creston, with views of Kootenay and Yoho National Parks and southeastern BC. Footage of interest includes: Revelstoke station and rail yards with locomotives; coal mines and miners at Fernie; coke ovens at Michel; farming in Creston area.

The item is a reel of unedited film footage. It shows a visit to a mining site on a steep hillside in a mountainous area, with shots of men posing outside mine entrance and cabin, and driving away in a car.

Archaeology projects in British Columbia, 1972 : miscellaneous sites

The file consists of 21 film reels of unedited footage shot by filmmakers working under an Opportunities For Youth (OFY) grant to document archaeological projects all over British Columbia. These 21 reels record archaeological excavation work during the summer of 1972, in the following areas: F1992:07/010-013: Williams Lake/Riske Creek -- camp scenes, botanical collecting, area scenery, and work at site(s). F1992:07/014-016: Kamloops -- North Kamloops flood scenes, OFY survey team, crew moving camp, OFY camp and activities, excavation site and flooding. More flood scenes, clearing river debris, etc. Labelling and recording artifacts in lab. Kamloops Museum: interview with curator; kids on school tour. F1992:07/017-018: Musqueam -- Salish Park Development, gravehouse, excavation in pit, artifacts, cataloguing, school tour at site, etc. F1992:07/019-022: Libby I -- Travelling to site, area scenery, surveying, digging, camp scenes. F1992:07/023-027: Libby II -- Tipi construction, surveying, areas flooded (by dam construction?), digging and screening, artifacts, travelling by track and canoe, etc. F1992:07/028: Williams Lake/Deep Creek. F1992:07/29-30: Unidentified.

Centennial travellers

The item consists of a documentary film in two parts. To mark Canada's hundredth anniversary, Canadian young people exchanged visits. This film follows a group of Québec boys and girls, aged thirteen to sixteen, who travelled 4800 kilometres west to Cranbrook, British Columbia. The easy friendliness between the young people of two cultures inspires optimism. (NLC description).

Big game camera holiday

The item consists of nature videos. Fictional narrator uses motion picture camera to track big game in Tweedsmuir Park and Cassiar district. Subjects include mountain caribou, mountain goats, grizzly bear, California bighorn sheep, whitetail deer, elk, stone sheep, moose and Osborn caribou.

The item is a travelogue video. It showcases the East Kootenay region and the Rockies. Includes footage of Cranbrook (Sam Steele Days), a rodeo, the recreated pioneer village of Fort Steele, Kimberley July Fest activities, Invermere, Yoho National Park (including Emerald Lake, Natural Bridge & Takakkaw Falls), mountain hiking, autumn scenes, fishing, winter, skiing and heli-skiing.
