Custodial history
Received by bequest from Carr to her literary executor and friend, Ira Dilworth. This photograph along with other photographs, sketchbooks, drawings, watercolours, textual materials and books was housed in Carr's old steamer trunk.
When Dilworth died he bequeathed this material to his two adopted daughters (and nieces), Phylis Inglis and Edna Parnall who divided the material between themselves.
This item is among the materials that came via descent from Carr to Edna Parnall.
The Parnall collection consists of Emily Carr art and papers presented to the British Columbia Archives in 1989.

General note
A short reference in a letter Carr wrote three years before she died helps date this photograph to within a year. She says that it had been taken in San Francisco on the day after the US Thanksgiving by a former art student who “came into the classroom [and] asked permission to take it, which I thought courteous.… Everyone said it was the best picture of me I would ever have. I bought ½ doz. from him & I remember the polite way he asked permission to make for himself an extra print.”
General note
It is possible that this photograph was taken in 1891 or 1892 as she was in San Francisco during this time period. Her dress is one that would have been made in the late 1880s. Sleeve styles changed dramatically in the 1890s.
General note
Note on verso states: Please return to Noel Wright, Vancouver.
