Fonds consists of mulitmedia records documenting Ida Halpern's professional work and private affairs of her life in Canada. The records document predominantly Halpern's study of the art and culture of First Nation's communities on the West Coast of British Columbia. In particular, Halpern's studies focus on the musical traditions and cultures of First Nations communities. Halpern's recordings include music from the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples, Nuu-chah-nulth peoples, Haida peoples, and the Coast Salish peoples. There is also a considerable amount of textual material concerning Halpern's study of her recordings and publication of her conclusions on her work. Material from her writings as a music critic and supporter of local arts comprises a smaller portion of the fonds. There are also records of Halpern's private affairs in the form of correspondence, photographs and various ephemera.

The fonds consists of Mildred Valley Thornton's sound recordings documenting the Indigenous music, dance and folklore of the Northwest Coast, recorded between about 1950 and 1954. The fonds also includes some textual material that documents her music recording activities and other interests, from 1947 to 1967. In addition there is a newspaper article from 1971 and family notes on her artwork from 1976.

SUMMARY: "Saturday Evening" was a series of 1.5 hour programs broadcast from 8:30 to 10:00 PM on Saturday nights. The series ran from October 1962 to the spring of 1967. Usually in two parts, the programs feat;ured plays, classical concerts, documentaries and talks. This episode, "Music And Culture Of The Northwest Coast", features a discussion about Indian music of the Northwest Coast with Peter Crossley-H;olland. The broadcast is primarily focused on topics that emerged at a 1967 conference held at UBC, titled "Native Indian Music of the Canadian West Coast and Its Relationship to Indigenous Music of O;ther Cultures", which was chaired by Ida Halpern.;

Nass River

SUMMARY: "CBC Monday Evening" was a multi-part series that included documentaries and interviews on the arts, along with drama and serious music. This episode, "Nass River", is a program devoted to the native Indian music of the Nass River area. Part 1 focuses on a concert of traditional Tsimshian songs arranged for flute and percussion. Recorded at the CBC Fall Festival of Music, this performance featured Harry Crozin [sp?] (flute) and William Goode [sp?] (percussion). Robert Clothier, the reader, recounts literal translations from Marius Barbeau's work on native music. Part 2 is a documentary on the discovery and preservation of the native music heritage, written and narrated by Peter Haworth. "Barbeau and MacMillan On The Nass" recounts the July-August 1927 visit of ethnologist Marius Barbeau and musician Ernest Macmillan, who came to research and document Indian music of the Nass area. In a more recent visit (1974), Don Mowatt and Peter Haworth attempt to recreate this first visit and seek out Indian elders who recalled these early songs. The area around Arrandale Cannery is visited. Recordings heard that include music, and also the voices of Barbeau and Macmillan. A chief, Frank Bolton, is recalled with his songs.;
