Scope and content

Field photograph attributed to Richard Maynard, part of a number of field portraits taken of a community village/settlement site by Richard Maynard during a government tour of inspection of Indigenous communities on Vancouver Island with I.W. Powell via the H.M.S. Boxer in 1874. Field photograph consists of a detail of a community village site, featuring two carved human figures holding a horizontal ladder surrounded by wooden racks and community buildings. It is a collodion glass plate negative (3.25x 4.5 inches). This negative has been manipulated. A section of the photograph (below the canoe at the bottom of the image) has been filled in to cover a gap in the emulsion that has a rectangular shape similar to a paper photographic caption. There are also [red paint] marks filling in areas with cracks in the emulsion (see top of image and at the top of the image above the side of the canoe).

General note

During the H.M.S Boxer tour of 1874, there were several accounts reported by the colonial news media and members of the H.M.S Boxer party of a visit to the Nuu-chah-nulth region and a community near Friendly Cove in the Nootka Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The British Colonist reported in the September 19, 1874 article “The Cruise of the Boxer” that the H.M.S. Boxer party arrived and stayed at "Friendly Cove" between September 10 and 11, 1874. The article noted that Friendly Cove was home to the “Movitchahts, known as the Nootkahs,”that the community had a large “ranch” and that many residents were absent, away fishing. No activity from the I.W. Powell party was mentioned but the article notes the presence of passengers “Bishop Seghers and Father Brabant” during this stop on the tour. Photographer Richard Maynard recorded the following in his notebook regarding taking photographs at “Nootka Sound”: “...arrived at Nootka Sound at 10. Saw 13. 14, 15, 16 Indian ranche at Nookta Sound 17-Naked Indians at Nookta Sound 18 H.M.S. ship “Boxer” in Nootka Sound 19 Landscape of Nookta Sound 20 Large of Indians, N Sound 21 Indian Camp, N. Sound Large 22 HMS. “Boxer” in Nootka Sound Large. Captain Cook visited this place in March 1778. Left Nookta Sound Friday 11 Sept..” Superintendent Powell documented the following in his report about the stop to the “Indian Office” dated October 29, 1874: “arrived at friendly Cove Nootka, the house of the Moo-cha-ahts on the 10th at noon.” Powell reports to have been greeted with the “salutation” “Wan-kash-wan-kash,” meeting the “successor” of Chief “Maquinna” and photographing “points of interest about [the] historic camp and inquiring into the general character and wants of its inhabitants.”
