Provincial Fisheries Department photographs

Series consists of black and white negatives and prints produced by the Provincial Fisheries Department from about 1906 to 1923. They depict fishways, fishing activities, and construction projects, mostly in the area of the Naas river. Other areas depicted are the Meziadin river, Bulkeley river, Bowser lake, Adams lake, and other locations. Records often depict the fishing activities of local First Nations.

Records have been arranged in the order they were found. In some cases the arrangement reflects the original order and in some cases it does not. In many instances negatives were filed with prints in the original developer's envelopes. In these cases the archivist assigned file numbers with a whole number for the negatives and a ".1" following the corresponding whole number for the prints. For example, file 11 contains the negatives and file 11.1 contains the prints that were originally housed with it. In many cases the prints and negatives appear to have been removed from their original container and mixed with other items.

Photographs of hatcheries and fisheries, Harrison Lake and Babine Lake

The series consists of photographs of hatcheries and fisheries in British Columbia. The contents, as identified by the donor, are included below. The numbers correspond to envelopes.

  1. This top picture was probably of a pontoon used to hold salmon before spawning. Or possibly to carry trays of eggs to the hatchery after spawning. The boats were used by the fisheries for one use or another.

  2. I have no idea where these were taken with the exception of the top two which have writing on the back [Knough Lake, Fish Lake (Lac la Jeune), and between hatchery and Kamloops]. Frank Tingley wrote on the back of these two [three] pictures so I'm presuming he took them. He was a long time friend of my father and the man who introduced my dad to the fisheries. Frank Tingley and my father were two of the four men kept on the department after Ottawa gave up the fish culture business in British Columbia. He lived in the east for the rest of his life.

  3. Harrison Lake hatchery

  4. I don't know who Mr. Timmins was and these may be of no interest. The second man in this picture was Frank Tingley.

  5. These were probably of hatchery workers. "First class living quarter." And one of maybe a hatchery house and one of a mountain goat may be of no interest to you.

  6. I'm sure these are all pictures of collecting and spawning salmon. My father is in the top picture pushing at the stern of the boat (oval picture). The rest are all unidentified men.

  7. Hatchery interiors with troughs

  8. Unidentified hatchery pictures. My father's writing is on the back of the Babine Lake picture and I'm sure one of the hatchery pictures is of the Babine Lake hatchery.

B-licence : the last run
