Administrative history

Fort George was a fur trade post established in 1807 by the North West Company. It was taken over b the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821 after the two companies merged. The fur post was located at the junction of the Nechako and Fraser rivers, approximately 250 kilometers from Stuart Lake. A store was established at Fort George in 1823. In the spring of 1824, the post was temporarily abandoned as a result of the murder of two men at the post, but the post was resumed in 1829. By 1891, Fort George was situated on the western bank of the Fraser River, just below the mouth of the Nechako River and approximately 150 kilometers north of Quenelle. The post ceased operations and was closed in 1915.
