Fort Stikine was located at the mouth of the Stikine River on Wrangell Island. Originally owned by the Russian-American Company, Fort Stikine was leased to the Hudson's Bay Company for ten years in 1839 and James Douglas received possession on June 1, 1840. The fort was closed in 1849 and trade was continued in the region by Hudson's Bay Company vessels based at Fort Victoria.
