Biographical history
Frank Cyril Swannell (F.C.S.) was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on May 16th 1880. He obtained a certificate in assaying from the University of Toronto in 1899 and moved to Victoria, British Columbia shortly afterwards. He received his Provincial Land Surveying licence in 1903, married Ada Mary Driver in 1904 and started his own surveying business in 1908. Swannell became well known as a surveyor and took several government contracts in the interior of B.C.
He enlisted in the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force in February 1915 and was sent to France. He was injured in the head by shrapnel at the battle of Festubert and recovered in hospital in England and the Military Convalescent Hospital in Esquimalt.
Swannell returned to surveying and continued in the field until 1945, including surveying for the Bedaux Expedition of 1934. He died in Victoria in 1969, at the age of 89.
