History
James Douglas Galbraith was born on November 8, 1908, in New Flos, Ontario. He graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Toronto in 1935. He came to British Columbia as a medical doctor and missionary on the United Church boat, the Thomas Crosby, and provided medical care to First Nations’ communities along B.C.’s northern coast. From 1936-1940, he worked as a physician at the Bella Coola Hospital, where he encountered many cases of untreated tuberculosis (TB) among the First Nation people there. Between 1941-1945 and 1951-1966, Galbraith was a physician at Coqualeetza Hospital in Sardis, B.C., and between 1945-1951 at Miller Bay Hospital in Prince Rupert. From 1966-1973, Galbraith worked in the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Galbraith researched and argued for improved preventative treatments of TB among First Nations. In 1998, he was awarded the Order of Canada. He died on May 10, 2010.
