Archie Georgeson interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-10-06 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Archie Georgeson recalls his grandfather, Henry Georgeson, who was the light keeper at Georgina Point, Mayne Island. His great uncle was light keeper at East Point light, Saturna Island;. He recalls the history of the Georgeson family in British Columbia; the Shaw family; the maritime background of the family; the family farm near Montague Harbour; the Gray family; fruit growing; schools; the family's move to join uncle at Active Pass light in 1909; a detailed description of the operation of that lighthouse. TRACK 2: Mr. Georgeson continues with his recollections including the grounding of the SS "Princess Adelaide" at Georgina Point in 1918; the grounding of the "Kenkon Maru" on Mayne Island, and the "Sea Lion". Cowichan District land register including various Gulf Islands

This series consists of a Cowichan Land District land register for various lots on Vancouver Island and other islands, including: Galiano Island, Mayne Island and Pender Island. The entries are arranged numerically by lots within local areas, i.e. individual islands. Records date from 1891 onwards and the volume was superseded in 1929 (i.e. no further entries were made after 1929).

This volume is a continuation of an unknown previous register and records the alienation of land from the Crown (by purchase, pre-emption, lease etc.). Information may include the name of the purchaser, dates and numbers of certificates issued (including Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments, and reference numbers to correspondence files and field books. The volume contains an alphabetical name index.

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-10-06 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Twiss describes how he came to BC in 1910; earlier had worked in Burma; did orchard work in the Okanagan; Fintry BC; the "Laird of Fintry"; Fintry ranch; Dun-Waters; various work in Victoria, and how he moved to Galiano Island. He describes early Galiano settlers. TRACK 2: Mrs. Twiss describes her father, Captain Gilmour. Then she discusses her life: born in 1886; came to BC in 1;910, met her husband at Fintry and moved to Galiano Island. Discusses the social life and customs; politics on the islands; more on social life and early settlers.

Devina Baines and Frances Brown interview : [part 1]

CALL NUMBER: T0795:0001 RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-10-06 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mrs. Frances Brown, daughter of Frank Togan Allison, describes life on Galiano Island, where her father operated the Porlier Pass Lighthouse from 1902 to 1941. The interview begins with her father's backgound, and how he got his nickname "Sticks" following a mining accident in Nanaimo. He took over the lighthouse in 1902. Her mother was Matilda Georgeson from South Galiano; the Georgesons; were also a lighthouse family. Subjects recalled include: Indian graves in the area; the lighthouse operation, and method of using the hand foghorn to direct ships; types of vessels that used Porlier; Pass; Coon Point. The tape continues with Mrs. Devina Baines; younger daughter of Frank Allison; recalling her childhood at the lighthouse; Indian neighbours; school; Porlier Pass; Chief John Peter, ;possibly of the Penelakut Band; lighthouse life; Japanese fishermen who lived on their boats and supplied the salteries. RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-10-06 SUMMARY: NOTE: This interview is a continuation of T0795:0001. TRACK 1: Francis Brown describes her father, Frank "Sticks" Allison (who was the Porlier Pass lightkeeper 1902-1941), including his background i;n Scotland and Nova Scotia. Other subjects are: her sister Devina's accident causing a bad lye burn; childhood around the lighthouse; Chief John Peter; Granny Shaw; schooling; Japanese fishermen; the ;herring fishery and saltery. Other aspects of lighthouse life include the foghorn; newspaper delivery; mission boats; the M.V. "Thomas Crosby"; missionary visitors; mail pick-up on Kuper Island; the ;Bell family; Indian legends; Starvation Bay on Valdes Island; hostility between natives and whites; how Christmas was celebrated. The item is an hour-long sound program produced for the Provincial Archives' Sound Heritage Series under contract, about pioneer days on the Gulf Islands. It includes the impressions and stories of early residents of Galiano, Saturna, North and Sound Pender, and Mayne Islands, emphasizing the arrival of new settlers, lighthouse life, and the joys and tribulations of island life.

Her father; Albert Hawthorne, came to BC in 1912. She discusses life on Mayne and Galiano Islands; and the barter of produce between the residents, the Robson family and Mr. Deacon. She relates the story of John Cook, who was kidnapped when young by the Haida Indians, and later returned to settle in Cook's Bay.
