File consists of the diary of Archibald McKinlay, the second part of two. The diary documents his travels in the role of reserve commissioner through the Okanagan region, and also contains copies of outward correspondence and expenses. A loose sheet in the back of the diary contains copies of letters written by James McKinlay and a list of plants.

British Columbia. Royal Commission of Inquiry -- Health and Environmental Protection, Uranium Mining

The series consists of unedited footage on 58 video cassettes and were made by Fred Easton and the B.C. Legal Education Project, a project funded jointly by the Federal Department of Justice and the Legal Services Society. The project's purpose was to record the community hearings of the British Columbia Royal Commission on Uranium Mining, and to produce a one-hour video documentary. The video material includes footage of commission members making on-site inspections of active uranium exploration sites (V1988:50/44-48), and of the September 1979 press conference at which the commission released its first interim report (V1988:50/58). There are also interviews with commission chairman David Bates (V1988:50/23), Environment minister Rafe Mair (V1988:50/52-53), and Health minister James Hewitt (V1988:50/49-51).

The series consists of records created by the B.C. Electric Railway Company between 1894 and 1917. The series includes correspondence and newspaper clippings with the City of Victoria concerning the operation of jitneys, disposition of the Company's assets, and labour problems; correspondence with the provincial government re land purchases in Prince Rupert by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway; operating statements of the Company 1914-1916; evidence given by Victoria City before Dr. Adam Shortt, Commissioner into the affairs of the B.C. Electric Railway and newspaper clipping books.

Papers relating to forestry and allied topics including briefs, exhibits, and notes relating to the 1943-1945 Commission on Forest Resources, 1955-1956 Commission on Forestry and material relating to the establishment of a Fraser Canyon Public Working Circle.

Commission of Inquiry Into Jericho Hill School

The commission was to inquire into the operation of Jericho Hill School for the deaf and blind; Ben Chud was appointed sole commissioner. Two administrative files and some background reports are available here. The final report is available at the Legislative Library. The Commission of Inquiry into Jericho Hill School was established pursuant to the Public Inquiries Act by Order in council 2018, dated 18 June 1974, with B. Chud appointed as sole Commissioner. The Commission was to examine the operation of the Jericho Hill School to discover any restrictions upon the extension of the operation or programmes to meet more fully the needs of the children. Secondly, the commission was to examine the present management system (A District Superintendent responsible for running the whole complex accountable to the Division of Supportive Services), and if appropriate, suggest alternative systems of management, including an analysis of the impact of the of the Public Service Classification System and salaries upon the ability of Jericho Hill School with respect to the recruitment and retention of staff. The Commission held approximately 120 private interviews with school staff, parents, related organizations, professionals in the fields of sight and hearing impairment as well as other interested persons from the community. Public hearings were held on July 9th and 12th at which time 53 presentations were received. The Commissioner met with the Director of Support and Integrated Services of the Department of Education, Victoria, held group meetings with teachers and administrators of the school, the Greater Vancouver Association for the Deaf, the Courtenay-Comox Pre-School Society, and travelled to Ontario and Quebec visiting several schools for the Deaf and Blind. The Commission submitted a final report on 4 September 1974. Fonds is incomplete except for some reports written on the subject of the school and provincial services for the sight and hearing impaired in years just prior to the commission as well as two commission administrative files. A copy of the Report of Inquiry, Jericho Hill School is available at the Legislative Library, Victoria.

The commissioner, Vancouver barrister Henry Osborne Alexander, was appointed to investigate the actions of past and present Boards of School Trustees of the City of Vancouver with regard to purchase and sale of school sites and school property, the purchase of furniture and supplies and generally all matters coming under the Board's jurisdiction. He was to investigate also the personal actions of all Board members, officers and employees, and appointments made by the Board.

This series consists of records of the Royal Commission on the British Columbia Railway 1977, 1978. A card index (BOXES 1-4), and guides and synopses (BOX 5) were compiled by the staff of the Commission. The card index provides subject and name access to the exhibits and testimony in the transcripts of evidence. References will be to exhibit number or volume(s) and page number(s) in the transcripts. For references to pages of testimony by individuals, see the indexes in boxes 1-4.

Special note should be taken of the series of files "Interrogatories", which were written questions submitted to B.C. Rail. The questions are compiled in item 3, BOX 5. Answers to questions are filed in BOXES 15 - 21. Several questions did not receive written answers This finding aid gives a listing of the subject matter of those submissions received from B.C. Rail.

In 2024 a box of profile maps and an atlas showing profile views and the route of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, created between 1964 and 1970, were found in collection. Documentation found with the maps indicated they may have originally been a part of this accession. They were incorporated into this Series as a Subseries. See GR-0500.I for more information.
