Scope and content
Item consists of one tableau vivant work by Hannah Maynard, part of a series of tableau vivant works created in the 1890s. It is a gelatin dry glass plate negative. The composite work is composed of several photographs merged together to form a single work using the techniques of double or multiple exposures. The image features four Hannah Maynards in several poses (two having tea, one holding a skein of woven material and one taking it up into a ball) in a domestic Victorian parlor scene. A (deceased) Maynard family member is visible, as a studio portrait on the front of the cushion cover under the table. The negative appears to have been manipulated. There are touch ups in [pencil] on the negative plate in the regions depicting the faces of Hannah Maynard, adding to the enhancement of the final image and reduction of facial wrinkles. The studio flooring, curtains, natural lighting, screens, furniture, textiles and plain backdrop attributed to Mrs. R. Maynards Photographic Gallery are visible.
