[Pacific Great Eastern Railway inaugural run, August 1956]

Special event coverage. Chronicles the August 28-30, 1956, inauguration of through-service on the Pacific Great Eastern Railway between North Vancouver and Prince George. Premier W.A.C. Bennett and other dignitaries ride the three inaugural trains, which are eagerly greeted by the residents of towns along the route. A rockslide at Mile 18 on Howe Sound delays the journey until a bulldozer clears the tracks. At Williams Lake station, a mock frontier lynching is staged for the entertainment of the premier and his party. Following footage of the arrival in Prince George, the film also shows progress on northward expansion of the PGE line (including bridge and grade construction), and ends with shots of oil rigs in the Peace River Region.

The item is a reel of documentary film. "This film shows the many uses of Caterpillar tractors, including supplying power for pneumatic drills and air hammers, ditching, excavation work, and hauling, both on clear ground and snow-covered terrain. Also includes shots of a portable crane loading steel onto a truck, and a railway car. Shots also of an old portable loader and a steam engine passing at speed. Bucking firewood. Men fighting a fire with hand tools and a bulldozer. After fire, men showering, having haircuts and washing up. [Close-up of] grub --meal on plate. Pay parade. The item is a reel of promotional film about caterpillar tractors. "Showing the extensive use to which Caterpillar tractors and graders can be put in preparing an area for logging by putting in roads and fire traits. It also illustrates the wide variety of jobs performed by "cats" in actual logging work.' A Caterpillar Tractor advertising film. Thie series consists of an extensive collection of stock shots, depicting a wide range of B.C. Forest Service and Ministry of Forests activities and related subjects. Compiled from footage shot for a variety of purposes, the material was retained for potential use as stock footage in BC Forest Service and Ministry of Forests film productions and TV spots. Some footage was also loaned out for TV news use.

[Blasting ; log dump scenes]

Stock shots. Footage includes: powder man preparing to blast section of rock; dumping truckloads of at the Port hardy log dumping ground; caterpillar tractors shifting logs and moving earth; more drilling and blasting; more log dump scenes.

[Engineering footage : road survey and construction]

Stock shots. Shows location crew surveying for road; clearing trees and preparing road area with caterpillar tractor, scraper and other heavy equipment; installing culverts; use of dredger and stone crusher; surfacing road with gravel. Also camp scenes, including cookhouse. Appears to be in the vicinity of Stone Creek and Willow River, in the Cariboo southeast of Prince George.
