History

Henry Cuthbert Holmes (usually known as Cuthbert Holmes, or Major Holmes) was born in Bellary, Madras Presidency, India, on December 15, 1890. His father was William Cuthbert Holmes of the British Indian civil service, and his mother was Clara Eveline Holmes (daughter of Henry Dumbleton, originally of Hallgrove, Bagshot, Surrey, England).

Cuthbert Holmes came to Canada ca. 1902; in the First World War, he served with both the Indian Army and the Irish Guards, rising to the rank of Major. He married Philippa Despard Pemberton (daughter of Frederick Bernard Pemberton) in Victoria, B.C. on October 12, 1917. In 1933 Holmes became president of Pemberton & Son Ltd., the company which became Pemberton, Holmes Ltd. in 1944.

Holmes was a co-founder of Brentwood College (Saanich) and governor of its board from 1923-1944. He was a major figure in the Victoria business community and civic affairs, with a long-standing interest in city planning and the preservation of greenbelt lands.

Cuthbert Holmes retired as president of Pemberton, Holmes Ltd. in 1965; he died at age 77 in Victoria on May 23, 1968.
