History
Fort Vancouver was one of the principal Hudson's Bay Company trading posts established west of the Rocky Mountains. It was situated on the Columbia River and christened on March 19, 1825. Between 1825 and 1849 Fort Vancouver was the principal headquarters and depot of the Columbia District. In June of 1849, the headquarters was moved to Fort Victoria. In 1853 Fort Vancouver became the headquarters of the new Oregon Department. It maintained this role until July 19 1860 when the post was abandoned. in 1869 the fort became the property of the United States.
