Biographical history
The British Columbia Geographic Branch was established in May 1912 as a sub-branch of the Surveys Branch of the Dept. of Lands. The name changed in 1919 to Geographic Division.
Custodial history
Source: Don Pearson, Mapping Section, Surveys and Mapping Branch. Transferred to the BC Archives in 1981. Accessioned in 1984.
Scope and content
Series consists of one bound alphabetical index of map books (and individual sheets) dating from 1859 to 1944 and thought to have been complied by the British Columbia Geographic Branch. The index includes a sheet number, book number, title, scale, and date for each item. Additional annotations in pencil, coloured pencil, or ink are found throughout.
The location of indexed items is unknown, and items may not be in the custody of the BC Archives.

Physical condition
Covers are marked. Fabric and leather covers are worn and torn along edges. Metal binding fixtures are marked and blackened. Many pages show staining from repeated use of the volume, particularly on bottom right corners. Tabs for the letters A, B, C, S, V, X-Z have been torn off and are missing.
