Title notes

  • Continuation of title: ...Indian chiefs grave on [xxxxx portion of caption trimmed off]...miles from Victoria Vancouver Island. [In pencil] Indian Grave on Fraser R. [In ink] When the chief of this tribe dies it is considered a mark of love and great esteem to sacrafice [sic] [sacrifice] his horse, and place its skin over his grave; if he is a great chief two or more horses are slain, and their skins suspended near to his grave, so that when he arrives in the happy hunting grounds, he will not be in want of a horse or gun or kettle - as such things are also suspended near to for his future use - if a gun it is without lock or trigger - if a new kettle one or more holes are made in the bottom of it, so that they many not be worth pilfering - but tinkers, gunsmiths and horse restorers they evidently fully expect to meet with on those longed for happy hunting grounds - where white-men are not!!!!! to despoil them, or drive away of [sic] the game, or make too free with all that they hold most dear.
