Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher : Women in Victoria's art circles

Item consists of an audio recording in which Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher reads the text of an address that she [later] delivered as part of an extension program, "Victoria's Art Circles and Victoria's Women, 1932", offered by the University of Victoria in February 1983. The address discusses women artists in Victoria, particularly Emily Carr and other members of the Island Arts and Crafts Society.

Humphrey Toms interview

In an interview with Mrs. Edith Hembroff-Schleicher, Humphrey Toms describes his association with Emily Carr, particularly in the 1930s. Toms saw Carr's work in the 1932 Island Arts and Crafts Society show. Met Carr in 1933. Toms describes visits to Carr's studio (1933) and to her skecthing camps. Anecdote about a sketch in Toms' possession. Other visits to sketching camps in the late 1930s and 1940, Anecdote about swapping old clothes for Carr sketches, 1936. Carr paints Toms' portrait. Assessment of Carr's work. Track 2 is blank.

Article : "My Friend, Emily Carr"

"My friend, Emily Carr" is an article written by Edythe Hembroff Brand (later Schleicher) after Emily Carr's death. It predates her manuscript for "M.E.": "A portrayal of Emily Carr" which was accepted for publication by Oxford University Press in 1951, but not published until 1969 by Clarke Irwin Company, Toronto.

One postcard photograph showing Emily Carr and other students in class at St Ives, Cornwall, England. Emily Carr has been identified as the student standing on the left with her back to the camera, wearing a hat and an apron. An unknown hand has written Emily and an arrow on the face of this postcard photograph. The image shows an art class given by either Julius Olsson or Algernon Talmage at the Harbour Studios, St. Ives. Art students Will Ashton and Hilda Fearon to Carr's left. Carr was in St. Ives 1901-1902.

Herbert Lanyon was a professional photographer resident in St Ives.

Madge Wolfenden interview : [Hembroff-Schleicher, 1977]

Consists of two audio recordings in which Madge (Wolfenden) Hamilton reminisces about her longtime friend, Emily Carr. She recalls the Carr family in the latter part of the 19th century in their James Bay homes, where they were friends with the Wolfendens. The first recording (T2708:0001) also covers Madge (Wolfenden) Hamilton's career as a public servant and librarian.

T2708:0001 was recorded in 1977; T2708:0002 was recorded in 1979.

Flo Bell and Hazel Edwards interview

Item consists of audio recording in which Hazel Edwards and her daughter, Flo Bell, recall Emily Carr's last sketching trip to Mount Douglas Park in August 1942. Mrs. Edwards was proprietor of the Mount Douglas Tea House, and Flo helped carry Carr's art supplies, etc. Carr's week-long stay at the tea house during the sketching excursion. Location of the tea house, cottage, etc., and relation to Carr's painting sites. Carr's personality and physical state at the time of their meeting. Track 2 is blank.

Emma Smiley interview

Item consists of one audio recording, with recordings on tracks 1 and 2. On track 1, Rev. Dr. Emma Smiley (1895-1983) discusses Emily Carr's religious beliefs and her association with the Victoria Truth Centre, beginning in 1933. Emily Carr's search for companionship and friendship. Her love for animals. The reasoning behind some of her paintings. Carr's influence on Mrs. Smiley, religious and otherwise. Attitudes towards circuit and local religious lecturers of the 1930s. On track 2, Carr's reasons for specifically attending the Victoria Truth Centre, and her interviews with the church pastor, Mr. Weston. Carr's eventual return to the Anglican faith of her youth.

Max Maynard interview

Item consists of one audio recording in which Max Maynard gives his recollections of his association with Emily Carr, especially in the period 1930-1938 when he and Jack Shadbolt were young painters and friends of Carr. Recordings on tracks 1 and 2.

Madeleine Nation interview

Item consists of audio recording of interview with Madeleine Nation, in which she discusses Canadian artist/painter, M.A. Suzor-Cote. Nation discusses her first acquaintance with Suzor-Cote, their early friendship in Montreal, and Suzor-Cote's method of art and subject matter. Nation also describes her modelling experience for Cote's sculpture sessions, as well as Cote's temperament and approach to his work. Nation also talks about her instruction in art with Brimner in Montreal.

The interview was recorded in Victoria in 1979, and covers the time period of 1912-1914. Track 2 of the tape is blank.

Personal papers and research notes

The papers of Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher, including research files on Emily Carr, Arthur Pitts and the Island Arts and Crafts Society, and personal correspondence and scrapbooks. Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher was a friend and sketching partner of Emily Carr. She wrote two books, M.E.: a portrayal of Emily Carr (1969) and Emily Carr: the untold story (1978). In 1974 she was appointed the "Special Consultant on Emily Carr for the British Columbia government". This collection includes material she gathered during her research, her research correspondence, and drafts of her books and articles. Hembroff-Schleicher also wrote about other subjects, including the British watercolourist Arthur D.J. Pitts who lived in Saanich from 1947 to 1972, and the Island Arts and Crafts Society. Hembroff-Schleicher grew up in Victoria. Her scrapbook and photo albums provide glimpses of life in the city. This collection also includes the journal of her travelling companion, Marian Allardt, during their trip to Europe 1928-29, and her correspondence with fellow artist Max Maynard. The files have been grouped into the following broad thematic categories; duplicates have been removed. Otherwise, the original composition of the files has not been altered: Research - Emily Carr (Boxes 1 to 3); Research - Arthur Pitts (Box 4); Research - Island Arts and Crafts Society (Box 4); Research - Ernest Hemingway (Box 4); Personal - Correspondence and documents (Boxes 4 to 6). The material Hembroff-Schleicher gathered during her research included photocopies of Emily Carr's correspondence. The copies have been retained only if they were annotated, or if they represented collections that are not held by the British Columbia Archives. This collection also included photocopies of all of Emily Carr's correspondence with Ira Dilworth. The photocopies were not retained in this collection because they were not annotated. The originals are in the Parnall (MS-2763) and the Inglis (MS-2181) collections.
