The series consists of a photograph album, possibly created by either photographer Edward Dossetter or Dr. I.W. Powell (Superintendent of Indian Affairs for British Columbia) in 1881-1882. The album contains 52 photographs, six illustrations apparently cut from a magazine or book and one postcard of an engraving.

The first 35 photographs were taken by Dossetter during the inspection of coastal Indian Reserves by Powell, on their 1881 trip on the HMS Rocket. The photographs are of First Nations people and villages. The album also contains a photograph of the Gorge in Victoria, seven photographs of celebration arches, four photographs of Esquimalt Harbour and two of Lytton, taken in 1882. These photographs may have been taken by Richard Maynard.

In addition there are six illustrations, mostly religious artworks, three photographs of Cornwall, England and a postcard engraving of a cannery.

Photographs of hatcheries and fisheries, Harrison Lake and Babine Lake

The series consists of photographs of hatcheries and fisheries in British Columbia. The contents, as identified by the donor, are included below. The numbers correspond to envelopes.

  1. This top picture was probably of a pontoon used to hold salmon before spawning. Or possibly to carry trays of eggs to the hatchery after spawning. The boats were used by the fisheries for one use or another.

  2. I have no idea where these were taken with the exception of the top two which have writing on the back [Knough Lake, Fish Lake (Lac la Jeune), and between hatchery and Kamloops]. Frank Tingley wrote on the back of these two [three] pictures so I'm presuming he took them. He was a long time friend of my father and the man who introduced my dad to the fisheries. Frank Tingley and my father were two of the four men kept on the department after Ottawa gave up the fish culture business in British Columbia. He lived in the east for the rest of his life.

  3. Harrison Lake hatchery

  4. I don't know who Mr. Timmins was and these may be of no interest. The second man in this picture was Frank Tingley.

  5. These were probably of hatchery workers. "First class living quarter." And one of maybe a hatchery house and one of a mountain goat may be of no interest to you.

  6. I'm sure these are all pictures of collecting and spawning salmon. My father is in the top picture pushing at the stern of the boat (oval picture). The rest are all unidentified men.

  7. Hatchery interiors with troughs

  8. Unidentified hatchery pictures. My father's writing is on the back of the Babine Lake picture and I'm sure one of the hatchery pictures is of the Babine Lake hatchery.

Victoria scenes [photographs]

The series consists of 10 glass plate negatives of Victoria scenes. The photographer(s) is not known. The photographs show: the Empress of Russia ship at outer wharfs; Esquimalt Harbour; the Empress Hotel; an archway over a street; and churches, including the Methodist Church on Hampshire road.

Lum family photographs

The series consists of four portrait photographs of the Lum family. The photographs are hand-coloured and mounted on linen stretched on a frame. The photographs are of Chin Lum Kee (also known as Ah Lum), Lucy/Squeetlewood, and Chu Ban Quan.

Chin Lum Kee (Ah Lum) was born in Canton, China, in 1835. He arrived in San Francisco by boat and traveled north to the Fraser Valley for the gold rush. Around 1860-1870 he partnered with Squeetlewood (known as Lucy), who was 16 at the time. Squeetlewood/Lucy was a Sto:lo woman and was born in Chilliwack in 1854. She is identified on the reverse of J-01353 as being "Hope Indian" (her father's name was Charlie Hope, born in Hope). The couple moved to Rock Creek and opened a supply store for miners and settlers. They had seven children together, one of whom was Lillian Martha Ban Quan. Chin Lum Kee worked as a cook for the Mounted Police in Fort McLeod in 1886.

Lillian married Chu Ban Quan (pictured in J-01352), who had arrived from Canton via San Francisco and was a miner. The couple moved to the Kootenays and were followed there by Lillian's parents, eventually settling in Fort Steele. In 1911, Chin Lum Kee returned to China. Squeetlewood/Lucy remained in Fort Steele for 44 years and died at the age of 97 in 1951.

The photographs are identified in ink on the reverse. The titles identify the individuals pictured and also provide brief biographical information.

J.W. Jones photographs

The series consists of 7 photographs associated with J.W. Jones. He is presumed to be the photographer of all of the photographs, but is only identified as the creator on one photograph.

The photographs consist of two views of unidentified ships, a shark killed at Esquimalt, and three group portrait photographs of an unidentified family.

Jones, John Wallace

There is a memorial service program from 1980 for Richard Nicholles (Emily Carr's nephew). There is also a book titled Emily Carr: Her Paintings and Sketches that is signed "To Alice with love from Ira", dated 1945. The series also includes a souvenir program titled Canadian Premiere of Klee Wyck: The Emily Carr Film dated 1947, and assorted brochures.

Provincial Fisheries Department photographs

Series consists of black and white negatives and prints produced by the Provincial Fisheries Department from about 1906 to 1923. They depict fishways, fishing activities, and construction projects, mostly in the area of the Naas river. Other areas depicted are the Meziadin river, Bulkeley river, Bowser lake, Adams lake, and other locations. Records often depict the fishing activities of local First Nations.

Records have been arranged in the order they were found. In some cases the arrangement reflects the original order and in some cases it does not. In many instances negatives were filed with prints in the original developer's envelopes. In these cases the archivist assigned file numbers with a whole number for the negatives and a ".1" following the corresponding whole number for the prints. For example, file 11 contains the negatives and file 11.1 contains the prints that were originally housed with it. In many cases the prints and negatives appear to have been removed from their original container and mixed with other items.
