Diaries

Diaries, 1903 and 1905; log of his yacht "Toketie," 1926, 1927, 1929, 1931-1940; diaries of summer cruises, 1933, 1934-1936, 1938-1940, 1941; archaeological catalogue. Mr. Barrow emigrated to Canada at the turn of the century, and looked for land in the Kootenays and lived on the Gulf Islands (initially on Brethour Island) before settling near Sidney. He and his wife spent many summers cruising the coast and his diaries contain notes on people they met, Indian villages, pictographs, petroglyphs, and many photographs. A selection of the photographs has been copied by Historic Photographs.

The fonds consists of diaries, a log of his yacht's activities, diaries of summer cruises and photographs, as well as films documenting the summer cruises and other vacation trips, 1938-1941.

Amateur film. Footage of the Kootenay Lake and Lardeau area, including views of and from a steam train en route to the region; arrival at Argenta steamboat wharf (?); a passenger train pulled by Motor Car M600 (a Ford Model B Truck on flanged railway wheels, which ran on the CPR line between Gerrard and Lardeau); the sternwheeler "Moyie"; children at a local school; a log cabin at lakeside; men hauling in a fishing net.

Includes footage of Indian villages, pictographs, birds and wildlife, logging, other vessels, etc. Notably, there are good shots of the abandoned villages of Gwayasdums, Karlukwees, and Mamalilaculla, as well as the burial ground on Klaoitsis Island.

Series consists of 45 photographs (copies), presumably taken by Francis Barrow. The photographs depict petroglyphs, totem poles, boats, coastal scenes, logging activities, and photographs of individuals.
