Applications for Crown grants

Series consists of three registers of applications for Crown grants documenting the final transfer of ownership of land from the Crown to the applicant. This is a central register for the entire Province of British Columbia, and is arranged alphabetically by last name of the applicant. The register also includes a description of the district and lot, the date, and the name of the person who submitted the application to the central office (often a government agent on behalf of the applicant). The series also includes two volumes of mineral claims.

Applications for government surveys

Series consists of an indexed volume of applications to the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works from individuals who have applied for pre-emptions or for the transfer of Crown land in British Columbia. Each application for a government survey has the name of the applicant, the date, the description of the property and usually includes a sketch map of the property.

Series consists of applications for pre-emption. The documents consist of handwritten applications often accompanied by a sketch map of the property. Each application is given a number by the Dept. of Lands and Works. The series includes the number 1 to 442.

The majority of the applications relate to properties on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands though some of the properties are also located on the Stikine River.

Applications to purchase surveyed lands

Series consists of registers documenting applications to purchase surveyed Crown land. Data elements include the file number, the name of the applicant, survey description including the legal description and district, V.C.L. or reverted, date of application and date received, disposition of application date, and amount of acreage. Volumes are arranged in alphabetical ranges by applicant last name.

Applications to purchase unsurveyed lands

This series consists of registers documenting applications to purchase unsurveyed Crown land. Information includes the date a notice was posted in the government gazette, the name of the applicant, the amount of acreage applied for, the district, location of the acreage, and a remarks column documenting whether or not the application was successful and any Dept. of Lands correspondence numbers relevant to the application. The registers cover all areas of the province, unless otherwise noted. There is an applicant name index in each register. The series includes the following volumes:

Certificate of improvement register

Series consists of a register of certificates of improvement. Register records numbers 1220-1520. Register fields include date, record number, name of applicant, location of pre-emption claim, district, amount of acres, amount paid, and any notes. Notes may include a note stating the transaction was cancelled or Dept. of Lands correspondence numbers relating the land transaction.

The series consists of certificates of claim and scrip issued for land in various districts of the Colony.

The series consists of certificates of purchase for land in various districts of the mainland Colony and Vancouver Island. Each form documents the name of the purchasor, the district and lot of the property and the price paid. A name index is at the front of the first volume.

The series consists of a circular despatches sent to the governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island from the Colonial Office in London. The series includes despatches sent to the Governor Kennedy and a register of despatches sent to Governors Blanshard and Douglas. The despatches listed in the register have not been found.

Data elements include: L.I., date,, no. to whom issued, to date from, location, amount of fee paid, renewed by no., renewal of no., assignments transferred to, L.I. There are four registers in this series including one register specifically for lot 4,593 East Kootenay district.

The series consists of copybooks of correspondence outward for Lands and Works Dept. containing letters from R.C. Moody and Robert Burnaby. The series includes letter books B, C, and D for the District of Queensborough, 1859 and are mainly concerned with public works and land matters.

Correspondence and contracts for public works projects

The series consists of correspondence and contracts between Surveyor General W.S. Gore, on behalf of the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works, with various contractors regarding three public works projects. The projects are the building of the Victoria Law Courts, correspondence and contracts from February to June 1887; Kamloops bridge, correspondence and contracts from March 1887 to February 1888; and Lillooet Bridge, correspondence and contracts from August 1887 to March 1888.

The series consists of books containing land sales records for Victoria, Esquimalt, Metchosin and Sooke districts. The series may include but is not limited to, land sales registers, land sales records, lists of sections and lots, sums deposited for lands and town lots, and land sales account ledgers. The names of purchases, district, section, payment in sterling and payment dates may be recorded.

The series consists of correspondence inward with drafts of replies from the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works and Surveyor General. The series includes registers of letters received (1865-1870) and a rough index to letters received (1866-1867).

Series consists of correspondence of the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works. Correspondence includes copies of letters inward and outward, copies of reports and maps. Correspondence deals with land issues including pre-emption claims, land-use, Indian lands and land disputes. Correspondence also deals with public works issues such as the Esquimalt Graving Dock or with the administration of the department.

Many of the documents are stamped with a Lands and Works number indicating the year the document was received and the document number in the office (i.e. “423/78 refers to the 423rd document registered in 1878). The Dept. of Lands and Works then grouped together related documents by subject with the subject written on a blue piece of paper that also served as the file folder.

Index to applications to pre-emption

Series consists of an index to pre-emptions. This is a register and alphabetical index to pre-emptions dated from 1871-1884. Pre- emptions are dated from 1-1599. The index includes a record no. and date of completion field providing evidence of whether or not a certificate of improvement was issued.

The series consists of reports of land recorders from the branch offices in Cowichan and Nanaimo District. The series includes reports, correspondence, sketches and maps. It also includes agricultural statistics, occupation records, and registration fees for Nanaimo District. Arranged chronologically.

The series consists of books of receipts for sales and sub-sales of land on Vancouver Island. The series includes receipts for land purchased in Victoria, Esquimalt, Metchosin, Lake, Highland, South and North Saanich, and other districts on north Vancouver Island and sub-sale receipts for south Vancouver Island.
