Series consists of three registers of applications for Crown grants documenting the final transfer of ownership of land from the Crown to the applicant. This is a central register for the entire Province of British Columbia, and is arranged alphabetically by last name of the applicant. The register also includes a description of the district and lot, the date, and the name of the person who submitted the application to the central office (often a government agent on behalf of the applicant). The series also includes two volumes of mineral claims.

Series consists of an indexed volume of applications to the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works from individuals who have applied for pre-emptions or for the transfer of Crown land in British Columbia. Each application for a government survey has the name of the applicant, the date, the description of the property and usually includes a sketch map of the property.

Series consists of applications for pre-emption. The documents consist of handwritten applications often accompanied by a sketch map of the property. Each application is given a number by the Dept. of Lands and Works. The series includes the number 1 to 442.

The majority of the applications relate to properties on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands though some of the properties are also located on the Stikine River.

The file consists of applications to pre-empt parcels of land on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands from 1871 to 1872. Many are accompanied by sketch maps of the lots claimed and correspondence. The applications are in chronological order and have lands file numbers written on the first page. These file numbers have been crossed out and replaced with pre-emption numbers P239 to P413.

Information includes the date a notice was posted in the government gazette, the name of the applicant, the amount of acreage applied for, the district, location of the acreage, and a remarks column documenting whether or not the application was successful and any Dept. of Lands correspondence numbers relevant to the application. The registers cover all areas of the province, unless otherwise noted. There is an applicant name index in each register. The series includes the following volumes:

The item is a a volume of certificates of purchase for lots on Vancouver Island and the mainland, numbered 1 through 44 and dated from 1870 to 1871. Each certificate lists the district, the lot information, the purchaser, the price and information about payment. The volume is indexed.

Certificate of improvement register

Series consists of a register of certificates of improvement. Register records numbers 1220-1520. Register fields include date, record number, name of applicant, location of pre-emption claim, district, amount of acres, amount paid, and any notes. Notes may include a note stating the transaction was cancelled or Dept. of Lands correspondence numbers relating the land transaction.

The file contains certificates of claim for land in the Colony of British Columbia, numbered from 823 to 1388. Each scrip allows the entitled person to claim 20 acres of land within twelve months of issuance and to exchange it for a certificate of conveyance. The scrips are signed by the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works, Richard Moody are numbered, dated and made out to a person. They also include provisions to transfer the scrip on the back of the form and notes about the lots exchanged for the scrip. The scrips are made out to William Ross, John Hale, Hugh McRoberts and John Thorne, who may have acted as land agents.

The unsorted file contains certificates of claim for land in the Colony of British Columbia. Each scrip allow the entitled person to claim 20 acres of land within twelve months of issuance and to exchange it for a certificate of conveyance. The scrips are signed on behalf of the Chief Commissioner or Surveyor General, are numbered, dated and made out to a person. They also include provisions to transfer the scrip on the back of the form and notes about the lots exchanged for the scrip. Many of the scrips are made out to John Thorne who may have acted as an agent, and many are made out for Municipal Councils. The file also includes earlier forms of claim, including purchases and requests via correspondence.

Series consists of copies of certificates of improvement forms bound in a book. Each form lists the name of applicant for a pre-emption, the description of the property, and a signature stating that the property has been reviewed. Certificates are dates 12 Apr 1870 to 12 Dec 1873.

The file consists of Governor Seymour's copies of circular despatches issued by Colonial Office in London, 1867. The despatches contain general regulations in regard to Board of Trade and Merchant Shipping issues as well as despatches regarding the cultivation of grasses for fibre, and Admiralty and Foreign Office affairs.

The series includes despatches sent to the Governor Kennedy and a register of despatches sent to Governors Blanshard and Douglas. The despatches listed in the register have not been found.
