The series includes despatches sent to the Governor Kennedy and a register of despatches sent to Governors Blanshard and Douglas. The despatches listed in the register have not been found.

Correspondence also deals with public works issues such as the Esquimalt Graving Dock or with the administration of the department.
Many of the documents are stamped with a Lands and Works number indicating the year the document was received and the document number in the office (i.e. “423/78 refers to the 423rd document registered in 1878). The Dept. of Lands and Works then grouped together related documents by subject with the subject written on a blue piece of paper that also served as the file folder.
