Agricultural survey of Northern B.C. : diary

The item consists of a typescript of a diary kept by E.W. White and E.A. Weir between April and September 1911. The diary gives daily details of their agricultural survey in the northern valleys between Prince Rupert and Fort George and was probably used as a resource in the writing of their joint report on the survey.

The item consists of a typed report or thesis, dated 1912. The report was written by E.A. Weir and E.W. White and contains a detailed description of their 1911 summer agricultural survey. The report is accompanied by detailed tables which show: the settlers in each area and information about the crops they grew; temperatures and weather recorded by area visited; tables of main distances travelled and the state of roads and trails; a list of the names and addresses of settlers given sugar beet seed; and a detailed list of 232 photographs taken during the survey.

The fonds consists of correspondence, a diary, a report, a meteorological observation journal and a photograph album created by E.A. Weir and E.W. White between 1911 and 1913. The records in the fonds documents the agricultural survey of the Northern Valley area contiguous to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, undertaken by Weir and White on behalf of the Dept. of Agriculture.
Weir and White were both students at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph and they spent the summer of 1911 travelling by boat, foot and pack horse investigating the agricultural condiitons and possibilities in the valleys between Prince Rupert and Fort George.

Photograph album

The item consists of a photograph album created by E.A. Weir and E.W. White in 1911-1912 to accompany their report on the subject of the agricultural survey they made of British Columbia from Prince Rupert to Fort George.

There are 293 black and white photographs in the album, each with dates and titles. The order of the album follows the order of their journey. Some of the photographs have been pasted together in twos or threes to form panoramas. The images show the country through which the men traveled, focusing on crops, farm animals and fruit trees. They also show settlements and settlers and transportation routes.

Report of meteorological observations

The item consists of a volume of meteorological observations taken by E.W. White and E.A. Weir between May and August 1911 while doing an agricultural survey of the northern valleys between Prince Rupert and Fort George.

A penciled inscription inside the front cover reads: This book if lost must be returned to E.W. White or E.A. Weir, Dept. of Agriculture, Victoria, B.C.

The details noted include the following types of observation: place, date and time, air temperature, weather, wind direction, clouds, rain and snow and general remarks.
