The item consists of a handwritten lecture delivered by J.W. Laing in San Francisco. The lecture was also delivered in the British Columbia Legislative chambers before the Speaker, Ministers, Members, and their friends. The lecture is on 60 handwritten pages and includes a three page list of slides used to illustrate the lecture. The slide numbers are also written on the lecture pages in red pen, probably as an aid to the operator of the slide projector. Two attached sheets claim that the lecture was given in Victoria on July 4, 1896 and in San Francisco on July 4, 1896. These dates are unlikely as Laing was on the Vancouver Island Exploring Expedition with William Bolton from July 1 to August 14, 1896.

The lecture describes the explorations undertaken by Laing and Bolton from Alert Bay to Alberni. Between pages 41 and 42, there are an additional 11 pages of notes regarding the practices of the Indigenous people of Friendly Cove.
