The album consists of 65 pages, which contain 58 b&w photographs from various creators, and 5 engravings. The photographs primarily depict scenery throughout British Columbia, as well as some photographs of First Nations people and villages. Many of the photographs appear to have been taken by George Mercer Dawson during Geological Survey of Canada expeditions (1878 and 1879), and are complemented by the Survey reports. However, there are also some photographs by Frederick Dally and by Richard Maynard. When known, the photographers and any identifying information are provided (see the attached list of photographs). Many of the unidentified photographs may be Geological Survey of Canada photographs by Dawson as several are numbered in a similar way.

Collection consists of records created by members of the Maynard family, primarily Hannah Hatherly Maynard and Richard Maynard. Hannah, Richard, and their son, Albert Hatherly Maynard, were professional photographers based in Victoria. Records include photograph albums, a portion of the photographic portfolio of Hannah and Richard Maynard, a studio register with over 5,000 customer entries for portrait orders fulfilled by Mrs. R. Maynard's Photographic Gallery, and a small number of textual business records. Within this collection, the works of other photographers and photographic studios may be found. Images depict studio portraits, family gatherings, field photographs for Department of Indian Affairs tours of inspection of Indigenous communities, construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway (C.P.R.), documentary photographs of the natural history collection of the Provincial Museum (now Royal BC Museum), and Hannah's experimental artistic works such as tableau vivants, photocollages, composites, montages, photo-sculptures, and double- and multiple-exposure studio portraits.

Records within this collection have been arranged into series that roughly correspond to Maynard Collection numbers that were assigned according to themes by either one of the Maynard family members or early BC Archives staff.

Photographs

The series consists of photograph albums and loose photographs created primarily by Frederick Dally. File MS-3100.11, Accession 198611-001, also contains photographs by Richard Maynard and possibly Oregon Hastings. All prints, whether loose or in albums, are black and white, created between 1866 and ca 1879.

The photographs contain Victoria streetscapes, Vancouver Island landscapes, the San Juan Island British Camp, and visiting Royal Navy ships and crews. As an amateur ethnographer, Dally photographed indigenous peoples in his studio, in coastal villages and through the Interior.

Photographs also include shots of the British Columbia interior including the Cariboo Wagon Road, isolated road houses and the gold rush town of Barkerville with portraits and views of miners posed at their placer gold claims and mining camps amid deforested hills.

Since photographers often sold their original glass plate negatives to other photographers when they went out of business, some of these original views may have been taken by other photographers, e.g. Carlo Gentile, but for the most part the images were shot and printed by Dally.

Newcombe family papers

Correspondence, notebooks, subject files, accounts, annotated books, etc., of C.F. Newcombe and his son W.A. Newcombe, reflecting their interest in the ethnology, natural history and history of British Columbia. Newcombe family papers. The G.T. Emmons collection, consisting of correspondence, notes and manuscripts, mainly on the Tlingit Indians. Maynard family papers, consisting of diaries and papers of Richard and Hannah Maynard, Victoria photographers, and their son Albert. Papers of Emily Carr, and re her estate, of which W.A. Newcombe was an executor.

Volumes 21 to 30 were arranged by the BC Archives in 1975.

Volumes 31 to 59 were arranged by the Royal BC Museum, ca. 1970. BC Archives volume and file numbers have been added to the these volumes.

Volumes 239/240 were Found In Collection in the Archives in 2022 and added to the collection.
