Quesnel Forest District resource management records

This series consists of a variety of records related to resource use and recreation management created from 1982-2002 by the Quesnel Forest District, a division of the Cariboo Forest Region. These records relate to the use and management of natural resources in the area, as well as recreation resources in Provincial forests. This includes trails and historical sites with value for tourism or other recreational uses. The records document the location, management, promotion and use of such sites.

The series includes the following types of records:

Local Resource Use Plans (LRUP) for the Barkerville and Blackwater areas. These plans are designed to resolve resource use conflicts in specific areas at the local level.

Resource management inventory files relate to the identification of the present and future opportunities from the Provincial Forest recreation resource, such as heritage trails. This also includes files on archaeological sites.

Resource management planning records relate to the establishment of recreation management objectives for the Provincial Forest recreation resource. Includes general information about types of plans as well as specific information concerning individual plans including: provincial, regional and district recreation plans, rivers and trails plans, cave or karst management plans, and historic (heritage) trail management plans.

Forest Service project site/trail files relate to the routine maintenance, rehabilitation and development of Forest Service recreation sites and trails. Includes records relating to the planning, designation, assessment, design and construction of recreation sites and trails.

Recreation brochures and maps were used to inform the public about forest etiquette, integrated resource management practices and field conditions. Also includes information about recreation signs and posters as well as general tourism information and notable sites in the area.

The series also includes procedures on the following subjects: recreation program implementation referrals; commercial use of crown forests; and resource management inventories.

Types of records vary widely, but can include correspondence, reports, studies, published material, photos, and maps.

The fonds consists of records created or acquired by Wallace in the course of his life as a teacher, public servant and retired member of the community.

The records reflect events held across the province in celebrations of the 4 centennials in British Columbia in 1958, 1966, 1967, and 1971.

The records are primarily photograph albums or scrapbooks and were arranged by Wallace as volumes in chronological order.

A small number of records contain correspondence and personal records related to Wallace’s family history in addition to collected ephemera related to centennial celebrations.

Published material included in the donation has been transferred to the archives’ library.

Records of the Deputy Provincial Secretary

This series contains records of the Deputy Provincial Secretary relating to the operations of the Ministry's branches. Many of these records deal with heritage conservation, museums, and cultural organizations. Records also deal with the administration of Royal Canadian Humane Association awards for bravery and life-saving.

GR-1661 is a pot-pourri of records accumulated by the office of the Deputy Provincial Secretary and by his various Assistant Deputy Ministers.The diversity of this collection is testimony to the multi- faceted operations and responsibilities of the Provincial Secretary's department.

A substantial number of the files deal with Heritage Conservation policies and heritage sites, such as Craigflower Schoolhouse, Barkerville, and Fort Steele.Many of the files also deal with cultural organizations and activities, with provincial fitness and recreation programmes, and with special interest groups.Other files in this unit pertain to the Royal Canadian Humane Association awards for bravery (which were coordinated by the ministry), to specific legislation re:the provincial flag, the provincial tartan, etc., and to the organization of out-of-town cabinet meetings.

Frederick Tregillus correspondence

Fred Tregillus (F.J.T.) came to Canada in 1882, working on the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1886 he began prospecting and mining in the Barkerville area. He was active in public affairs, serving on the local School Board, the local Board of Trade, and the Local Exemption Tribunal. He was also Secretary of the Barkerville Branch of the Provincial Mining Association of B.C. He died in 1962 at the age of 99.

The records include: letters inward, 1909-1931, including letters from Cariboo Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA's), friends, and mining acquaintances and letters received as Secretary of the Barkerville School Board from teachers applying for positions.

SUMMARY: "The Hornby Collection" is an anthology of plays, documentaries, interviews and selected fiction for radio -- all written, prepared and produced in British Columbia. "Barkerville" is a poem for voice;s by Florence McNeil, set in BC's most famous ghost town.;

Cariboo district land records

This series contains the records of the Gold Commissioner, Government Agent, and Assistant Land Commissioner, Cariboo District (Quesnel). The records consist of lot registers, certificates of purchase, certificates of pre-emption, registers of pre-emptions (canceled and allowed), registers of land applications and lands purchased, register of leaves of absence granted pre-emption on active service, minute books containing lot register of lands along the route of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, and registers of hay and pasture land leases. The series also includes townsite registers for Quesnel, Barkerville, and Wells and lot registers for some townships in the Peace River Block. Volumes 89-98 and 153-158 are oversize.

Highways to splendor

The item is a composite print of a travelogue film from ca. 1970. It depicts a scenic trip on the "Queen of Prince Rupert" from Kelsey Bay to Prince Rupert introducing such destinations as Vancouver, Victoria and the Cariboo. Includes shots of Active Pass, Barkerville, Campbell River and the W.A.C. Bennett Dam. The Inside Passage and the province's highways are seen as parallel north-south "highways."

Between ourselves : Oak Street

SUMMARY: "Between Ourselves" was a weekly series of hour-long radio programs that presented Canada to Canadians. It featured aspects of Canadian life in docudramas, plays, music, and interviews, originating from different regions of Canada. The series ran from 1966 to 1979. This episode, "Oak Street", recounts the settlement of the Jewish people in British Columbia. Accounts of early Jewish settlers of Victoria, Vancouver, and Barkerville are featured, and the origins of synagogues in Victoria and Vancouver are described. Present-day activities of the Jewish community, and the role of women, are also discussed.

Herb Gardner interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], [196-] SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Herb Gardner was interviewed while holding the office of Mayor of Williams Lake. He describes the federal building; the regional board; urban planning; and the electoral process. Before elections, people were appointed to the board. Demographics of the district. Mr. Gardner offers his own personal history; born in Quesnel and lived in Barkerville; stories about old timers; his father came into the country in 1900, and was a shoemaker before becoming a miner; eventually his father ran a stopping house on a ranch; in 1928 the family moved to Quesnel and worked in the saw mill business. He describes what Williams Lake was like back then.

TRACK 2: Mr. Gardner comments about how smaller sawmills were driven out by economics and larger ones took their place; the lumber industry and how it drives the economy of Williams Lake; prospecting and cattle ranching; stampedes; how much he likes living in Williams Lake. He compares living in Quesnel to living in Williams Lake. He discusses the future and the progress of Williams Lake.

Archie Phelps interview

Phelps -- died 1885) arrived in Victoria in 1849 after the California gold rush, other grandfather Robert Coultson was friend with Governor Seymour, his father William Henry Phelps was the first teacher at Mayne Island and eventually to Barkerville, a description of the school in 1884, the differences between the schools at Mayne Island and Barkerville, details on Barkerville, the family's move to Pender Island including what life was like there, the wharf at Port Washington, people at Pender Island including the school and teachers there, how he became a steward on the ferry at age 15, and then a ship builder in San Francisco, anecdotes about the ferries including one where Indians attacked a ferry and another where an Islander was lost coming back from Skagway, his work on a tugboat, and details on what tugs were like in those days.
