Comiaken Land District land register

This series consists of a Comiaken Land District land register for Range 1, Section 1 to Range 3, Section 19 on Vancouver Island. The volume date 1859-1885.

The register is arranged numerically by Range and Section and records the alienation of land from the Crown (by purchase, pre-emption, etc.). Information may include the name of the purchaser, dates and numbers of certificates issued (including Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments and reference numbers to correspondence and field books. The volume includes an alphabetical name index.

The register contains one pre-emption entry and some notes. Information may include the name of purchaser dates and numbers of certificates issued., (including Crown Grants), along with cross references to other registers.

Applications to purchase unsurveyed lands

This series consists of registers documenting applications to purchase unsurveyed Crown land. Information includes the date a notice was posted in the government gazette, the name of the applicant, the amount of acreage applied for, the district, location of the acreage, and a remarks column documenting whether or not the application was successful and any Dept. of Lands correspondence numbers relevant to the application. The registers cover all areas of the province, unless otherwise noted. There is an applicant name index in each register. The series includes the following volumes:

This series consists of one register documenting applications to purchase unsurveyed Crown land. Information includes the date a notice was posted in the government gazette, the name of the applicant, the amount of acreage applied for, the district, location of the acreage, and a remarks column documenting whether or not the application was successful and any Dept. of Lands correspondence numbers relevant to the application. The register covers all areas of the province. There is an applicant name index in each register. Note that the volume also includes cancelled or disallowed entries.

The series consists of records created by the Dept. of Lands and Works between 1862 and 1909. The records include contracts, specifications, plans, correspondence, returns of work performed, reports and accounting material pertaining to the construction, maintenance, and repair of diverse roads, bridges, dams, wharves, and buildings. The records are arranged roughly by district.

The series consists of records created by the Dept. of Lands and Works between 1872 and 1896 regarding public works. The records contains contracts, specifications, correspondence, and some plans connected with the construction and repair of schools, government buildings, and smaller works.

A limited number of files contained plans and a few files contained plans only. These files are indicated in the finding aid by * and ** respectively. All plans have been removed from the files and accessioned in the Map Collection as M856047. Appendix 1 of the finding aid lists the plans.

The file list provides the file number assigned by Public Works, the original contract number in square brackets, the name of the building or work, and the date of the contract.

This series contains the records of the Public Works Engineer, Works Branch. It includes records such as annual reports on roads, streets and bridges, including reports and memoranda of district road and bridge superintendents. It also consists of records of expenditures necessary to build, maintain and repair bridges and returns on highways and bridges in British Columbia that would have been submitted by Government Agents.

Timber mark certificates

The series consist s of timber mark certificates. The certificates were created in accordance with the Timber Mark Act of 1890 (SBC 1890, ch. 47). The act instructed all persons engaged in the business of lumbering, or getting out timber by floating or rafting, shall select a separate and distinct mark and register the marks with the government.

Series consists of certificate numbers 1 to 16,000 created between 1890 and 1934. The certificate forms record the file number, who the certificate was issued to, information about the timber operation, the land district and forest district. The forms also record the gazette number.

Certificates of improvement : Cariboo District

Series consists of copies of certificates of improvement forms bound in a book. Each form lists the name of applicant for a pre-emption, the description of the property, and a signature stating that the property has been reviewed. Certificates are dates 12 Apr 1870 to 12 Dec 1873.

Applications for pre-emption

Series consists of applications for pre-emption. The documents consist of handwritten applications often accompanied by a sketch map of the property. Each application is given a number by the Dept. of Lands and Works. The series includes the number 1 to 442.

The majority of the applications relate to properties on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands though some of the properties are also located on the Stikine River.

This series consists of pre-emption records for west coast land relating largely to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. The records consist of pre-emption registrations, certificates of pre-emption, pre-emption sketches, certificates that certain lands are unoccupied and open for settlement, some certificates of improvement, and correspondence.

Minutes of decision of Joint Indian Reserve Commission

The series consists of minutes of decision of the Joint Indian Reserve Commission (1876-1878) of governments of Canada and British Columbia and of the Indian Reserve Commission (1878-1907) of the government of Canada regarding allotment of Indian reserves in British Columbia.

Records consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports and coloured maps of the reserve allotments. Although these records are called Joint Reserve Commission records, they probably form part of the British Columbia Department of Lands and Works fonds. Most of the records are stamped with the Lands and Works Dept. stamp and also have Lands and Works file numbers assigned to each, after they were received from the Commission. Some files then had additional related records added to by Department staff, as reserves were surveyed or related issues came up. Additional records were added to several files by Department of Lands staff up to 1949.

In addition, the series includes an item level precis of each document, created by the Dept. of Lands in 1980. The precis are filed in the first file of each box.

This series consists of selected correspondence files from the several branches of the Department of Lands and works, and its successor the Department of Lands: Lands, Surveys, Water Rights, and Forests. Records include requests for information concerning the availability of land in British Columbia, Water Rights Branch correspondence concerning various power projects and irrigation, forest fire reports, and files on Forest Branch launches. Note: "WRB" refers to Water Rights Branch.

Correspondence and contracts for public works projects

The series consists of correspondence and contracts between Surveyor General W.S. Gore, on behalf of the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works, with various contractors regarding three public works projects. The projects are the building of the Victoria Law Courts, correspondence and contracts from February to June 1887; Kamloops bridge, correspondence and contracts from March 1887 to February 1888; and Lillooet Bridge, correspondence and contracts from August 1887 to March 1888.

Applications for Crown grants

Series consists of three registers of applications for Crown grants documenting the final transfer of ownership of land from the Crown to the applicant. This is a central register for the entire Province of British Columbia, and is arranged alphabetically by last name of the applicant. The register also includes a description of the district and lot, the date, and the name of the person who submitted the application to the central office (often a government agent on behalf of the applicant).

The series consists of certificates of purchase for land in various districts of the mainland Colony and Vancouver Island. Each form documents the name of the purchasor, the district and lot of the property and the price paid. A name index is at the front of the first volume.

Correspondence regarding steam boiler inspections

This series consists of one volume of correspondence outward related to steam boiler inspectors and contraventions of the Steam Boiler Inspection Act, from 1907-1909. The majority of the correspondence is from the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works. The volume is labelled volume number two and is indexed alphabetically by name of addressee.

Certificates from before 1868 are created by the Colony of Vancouver Island Office of the Surveyor General.
Certificate from 1869-1871 are created by the Colony of British Columbia Department of Lands and Works. Certificates created after 1871 are created by the Province of British Columbia Department of Lands and Works.

This series contains 2 volumes of Timber Licences Indices. These registers contain information such as the name and licence number, date, fee amount, some file references and clippings of gazette notices related mostly to the Cariboo district. Volume 1 covers the period 23 July 1907 to 12 June 1908 and contains a nominal list, an index to the Departmental Map, and the notation, "to be used in conjunction with the Timber Licence Register." Volume 2 covers the period 22 October 1907 to 27 April 1908.
