Gems of British Columbia for the year 1893
Part of Maynard family collection
Item consists of one photograph from the Gems of British Columbia works by Hannah Maynard, part of a series of photocollages created in the 1880s and 1890s. The image design includes a central star with fourteen stars placed around the central shape. Portraits of babies are placed in smaller stars. The fountain from a previous Gems of British Columbia work is located in the bottom left and right corners. The Gems of British Columbia work attributed to 1892 is featured at the bottom centre of the composition which contain tiny versions of earlier Gem begonia works. This negative does appear to have been manipulated. There are details in pencil that include dots, markings that finish the shape of the smallest stars and markings that create branches with leaves or flowers drawn around babies located in the larger stars. These are drawn on the plate adding embellishment to the final image. The following text is present on the image: Gems of British Columbia 1893. Two tongs and the sides of a chair are visible, holding the framed work up to be photographed in an unknown location. A pillow or cushion can be seen behind the photographic work. It is attributed to being the Gem for 1893.
The item described does not appear to the an original negative and may be a preservation copy created by BC Archives.

Part of Todd, Gillespie family fonds
This "Gem" from photographer Hannah Maynard’s “Gems of British Columbia" series appears to have been created for 1883. The work includes child and baby portraits taken in previous years and features the portrait of a child from the pioneering Spotts family. Located beside the left flag in the centre of the work, it is likely “Cecillia Spotts”.
Several of the Spotts family children were photographed by Victoria-based Hannah Maynard of Mrs. R. Maynard's Photographic Gallery, including “Cecillia Spotts” and “Percy Spotts.” The Alexander and likely Barnswell families, also appear to have been clients of the Maynard Studio and represent other pioneering Black families of Vancouver Island and British Columbia.
