Personal papers and research notes

The papers of Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher, including research files on Emily Carr, Arthur Pitts and the Island Arts and Crafts Society, and personal correspondence and scrapbooks. Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher was a friend and sketching partner of Emily Carr. She wrote two books, M.E.: a portrayal of Emily Carr (1969) and Emily Carr: the untold story (1978). In 1974 she was appointed the "Special Consultant on Emily Carr for the British Columbia government". This collection includes material she gathered during her research, her research correspondence, and drafts of her books and articles. Hembroff-Schleicher also wrote about other subjects, including the British watercolourist Arthur D.J. Pitts who lived in Saanich from 1947 to 1972, and the Island Arts and Crafts Society. Hembroff-Schleicher grew up in Victoria. Her scrapbook and photo albums provide glimpses of life in the city. This collection also includes the journal of her travelling companion, Marian Allardt, during their trip to Europe 1928-29, and her correspondence with fellow artist Max Maynard. The files have been grouped into the following broad thematic categories; duplicates have been removed. Otherwise, the original composition of the files has not been altered: Research - Emily Carr (Boxes 1 to 3); Research - Arthur Pitts (Box 4); Research - Island Arts and Crafts Society (Box 4); Research - Ernest Hemingway (Box 4); Personal - Correspondence and documents (Boxes 4 to 6). The material Hembroff-Schleicher gathered during her research included photocopies of Emily Carr's correspondence. The copies have been retained only if they were annotated, or if they represented collections that are not held by the British Columbia Archives. This collection also included photocopies of all of Emily Carr's correspondence with Ira Dilworth. The photocopies were not retained in this collection because they were not annotated. The originals are in the Parnall (MS-2763) and the Inglis (MS-2181) collections.
