1997 North American Indigenous Games fonds

The fonds consists of the records generated by the 1997 North American Indigenous Games in the course of managing the sport and cultural events that took place in Victoria, BC in August 1997. The fonds includes two series: the management files of Alex Nelson, Executive Director and Rick Brant, General Manager and marketing files. The management files are arranged by subject and include correspondence with the Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Association of BC (ASRA) and other records relating to the management, administration and financial aspects of the games. The management files also include policy and procedure files, briefing materials, reports and minutes from meetings. The marketing files are arranged alphabetically by subject and consist of general files regarding all aspects of marketing the sport and culture events of the games. The marketing files also include a poster, examples of bronze, silver and gold medals and three videocassettes.

The cassettes were transcribed by Loenen. The additional records are textual including research on the constitutional rights of the caucus to request the Premier's resignation; personal notes taken during caucus meetings; correspondence; and press conference reports.

The fonds consists of copies of documents concerning Spanish exploration, settlement and missionary work collected by Freeman Tovell for research purposes. This material was microfilmed around 1987. The fonds also includes research material compiled by Freeman Tovell during the research and writing of his book "Far Reach of Empire", a book about the Spanish exploration of British Columbia's coast. The records contain multiple drafts of the book as well as research material, including photographs and maps, articles and subject files ca. 1987 to 2011. In addition the fonds includes 30 cm of Freeman Tovell's correspondence files.

The list of guests who appeared on the show is a virtual "who's who" from a decade in Canadian public life. Politicians, labour leaders, prominent business people, authors, academics and entertainers were among those interviewed by Jack Webster, a veteran journalist with a reputation for being both tough and fair.
