Bureau of Mines photograph albums

  • GR-3264
  • Series
  • [188-?]-1936, 1966

The series consists of photographs taken by or collected by the Bureau of Mines, where they were compiled into 30 photograph albums. Some of the albums, or parts of the albums, were compiled at the end of the year's work and were intended by the Provincial Mineralogist to document his annual summer field work throughout the province.

Many of the photographs were published each year in Department bulletins and in the Annual Report of the Minister of Mines. There is a coding in the albums which indicates that a photograph was used in the Annual Report. For example, “R1925 - A182” signifies that the photograph was used in the 1925 Annual Report of the Minister of Mines on page A182. Each Annual Report of the Minister contains narrative descriptions of the field trips taken by the Provincial Mineralogist and other Bureau of Mines staff, so it is possible to trace the relationship each year between these field trip narratives and the photographs.

W. Fleet Robertson (Provincial Mineralogist from 1898 to 1925) took some of the photographs. Beginning ca. 1906, Harold T. Nation was an assistant to the Provincial Mineralogist, and travelled with him on his summer field trips, taking photographs, compiling many of the photo albums and indexing them. Exceptions were the years 1914-1917, when Nation served in the military in Europe, after which he returned to his former position. Others from the Bureau of Mines who contributed to the creation of the albums include: W.A. Carlyle, (W. Fleet Robertson's predecessor as Provincial Mineralogist); J.D. Galloway (Robertson's successor); Herbert Carmichael (an Assistant Mineralogist); and Newton W. Emmens. They took photographs or directed that photos be taken to document their work in the field. Many photographs are labeled “B.C. Bureau of Mines” but the photographer is not identified.

Some of the albums, or parts of albums, appear to have been compiled, not an annual basis, but at a later date, and were labeled “miscellaneous.” They relate to the mining industry, geology, mineralogy, and local culture, but are not related to the annual field trips. The Provincial Mineralogist's office collected some of these from private sources including mining companies and miners. Professional photographers whose work is found in the albums include: R.J. Hughes (Trail, BC), Hughes Bros. (Trail, BC), Joseph F. Spalding (Fernie, BC), Carpenter & Co. (Rossland, BC), Carpenter & Millar (Rossland, BC), The Dominion Photo Company (Vancouver), Richard H. Trueman (R.H. Trueman & Co., Vancouver), E.F. Tucker, and Leonard Frank. There are a small number of photos taken by Charles Camsell of the Geological Survey of Canada, 1911, so it is possible others were taken by federal government employees.

Subjects include a very wide range of industrial and cultural activities and geographic features. These include: mines and mining operations and equipment; mining camps, prospectors, miners' houses, powder magazines, first aid teams, fire brigades, mine rescue squads and stations; immigrant workers; refineries, smelters, coke ovens, concentrators, brickyards, slag dumps and tailings; railways and rail trestles; boats, scows, ships, and dredging; landscape and terrain features including rivers and mountain ranges; mining industry towns, schools, hospitals, hotels, churches, government offices and wireless offices; First Nations activities and culture, including totem poles, grave sites, and villages; whaling and whaling stations; horse pack trains, Hudson's Bay Company posts; and conferences and congresses attended by Bureau of Mines staff.

Many of the photos are annotated with directions for the printing/publication process. Many are pieced together to create panoramas. Some albums have accompanying individual indexes and some have been indexed in the master alphabetical index.

Photographs

The series consist collected photographs of the Kootenay region, primarily dating from the early 1900s. The photographs document families, landscapes, and activities in Beaton, Camborne, Trout Lake, Ferguson, Sandon, Silverton, St. Leon, Arrowhead and Arrow Lakes, Comaplix, and the Lardeau region. Many of the photographs show mines and stage coaches.

The photographs appear to have been collected by Fred Lade, a resident of the area, and he is presumed to have created the arrangement structure (see below). The arrangement suggests that some photographs were collected from other individuals or families (e.g. Gunterman, Angus, etc). The majority of the photographs have been identified on the verso and these captions are available in the file lists at lower-level descriptions. The captions are presumed to have been provided by Fred Lade.

Personal and family records

Series consists of personal and family records created and assembled by Jean Donald Gow in her career as an illustrator, artist, and wife of a Canadian naval officer while stationed in Victoria and elsewhere from the 1920s to the 1950s. The series also includes records relating to her father, Dr. David Donald, and research notes on Emily Carr, the Esquimalt Group of artists (with whom Gow was associated while living in Victoria in the 1920s), and the Maritime Museum. The series contains over 600 b&w photographs, the majority of which are housed in two albums: one which focuses on World War I and another which is a personal family album. There are loose photographs interfiled throughout (these are indicated in the file list). There is also one oversized exhibition record for "Jean Donald" from the Royal Drawing Society, which lists her awards obtained in 1921-1922, and 1924. A final line dated 1926 has been added in pencil.

Photographs

The series is a photograph album created or acquired by Herbert Carmichael, sometime between 1897 and the early 1900s. It contains photographs of Victoria and area, particularly photos of Beacon Hill Park, Victoria Harbour and sailboats. There are also Vancouver Island photographs, including images of the Cowichan and Alberni areas and images taken on the mainland including Kootenays and coastal areas. There are a few photographs taken in Northern Island, Sault Ste. Marie and England. Most of the photographs have either stamped or penciled captions.

Photographs

The series consists of 76 b&w photographs (prints and glass negatives) of BC Land and Investment Agency (BCLIA) properties (in an album) and BCLIA offices and employees. It also includes a large matted print of Henry Slye Mason dressed in judge's robes and wig.

Bureau of Mines negatives and lantern slides

  • GR-4099
  • Series
  • [ca. 190-] - 1953

The series consists of photographs (lantern slides and a few glass or flexible negatives) created by the offices of the Bureau of Mines and the Dept. of Mines between ca. 1900 and 1953. The photographs depict all aspects of Bureau activities including surveys and inspections. Many of the glass negatives were taken by W.F. Robertson and H.T. Nation of the Bureau of Mines and were often used for annual reports and other publications. The bulk of the photographs are glass lantern slides, either made from Bureau of Mines photographs or copied from other sources. Photographer Edgar Fleming took or copied many of the photographs for the Department. These slides show mines and mining operations and equipment; mining camps, first aid teams, refineries, smelters, coke ovens, concentrators, railways and rail trestles; boats, landscape and terrain features including coast, rivers and mountain ranges and aerial views. There are also a significant number of maps and technical drawings.

Occasionally other photographer initials M.S.H., S.S.H. and W.H.M. are noted on the slides. There are 63 slides of South African mines and general views, 23 slides of the Alcan Kemano project from 1953 and various portraits scattered throughout the series, as well as ca. 115 aerial views from the 1930s, many with their own numbering scheme.

The series also includes an additional 38 glass lantern slides from the 1920s, alienated from the main run of lantern slides and transferred separately. Most of these slides were made of photographs taken by Edgar Fleming for the Bureau of Mines but also include some slides of maps and technical drawings.

Inventoried lantern slides by subject

The series consists of lantern slides associated with the Maynards. There are 17 boxes (see file list below) that correspond to a lantern slide index, arranged alphabetically by subject. Broadly, the subjects include: portraits; views of Victoria (street scenes, buildings and historic houses, militia, Legislature, etc) and various other locations across British Columbia; Indigenous peoples [note: outdated and offensive terminology is used throughout this collection and is also reflected in the attached finding aid]; ships, shipping, maps, and charts; and slides of printed manuscript material.

The names Fleming and Maynard can be found on the lantern slides and internal BC Archives documentation indicates that Edgar and Harold Fleming mounted at least some of the slides and A.H. Maynard compiled and/or photographed them. Many different photographers are assumed to be responsible for the original photographic images.

Indigent Fund administration files

  • GR-0289
  • Series
  • 1914-1933 [predominant 192-]

The series consists of records created by the Deputy Provincial Secretary between 1914 and 1933 pertaining to the administration of funds for the "aid of the destitute, poor, and sick."

Between 1872 and 1942, an annual vote of funds was included in the estimates of the B.C. legislature. The fund, which was administered by the Office of the Provincial Secretary, originally contained $500. By 1935, this figure had risen to $110,000; but in the fund's final year of existence, 1943, the vote of funds had declined to $40,000.

The Indigent Fund, unlike the Mother's Pension, the Old Age Pension (1927), or the Veterans Assistance plans was not tied to an Act of Parliament, and thus relief was provided to people under a wide range of circumstances, and included many who failed to qualify for assistance under specific federal or provincial schemes. The fund was designed to meet the immediate and shortterm needs of rural B.C. residents (municipalities had their own funds) who through misfortune or bad planning had found themselves without "the necessities of life." The key to the fund, until the early 1930s, when the position of Superintendent of Welfare was created, was the Deputy Provincial Secretary, for it was often at his discretion that assistance was provided. He was aided in his duties by the various Government Agents, who were responsible for handling vouchers, disbursing cheques, and reporting to Victoria any new developments in individual cases. They, in turn, were assisted by Provincial Police constables who usually investigated each case and submitted a report.

The records consist of correspondence inward and outward from the Deputy Provincial Secretary's office; correspondence from Government Agents to the Deputy Provincial Secretary; Provincial Police reports on the condition of Indigents; correspondence from indigents or persons representing them to the Premier, Ministers, and the Deputy Provincial Secretary; and miscellaneous correspondence to and from various government departments and agencies such as Workman's Compensation Board, Department of Immigration, public hospitals, police departments etc.

The files are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the indigent. They are not, however, arranged alphabetically within each folder. There are two alphabetical series, as well as two sets of files titled "miscellaneous". All files have been preserved in their original order.

Proof sheets and photograph collections

The series consists of photographic proof sheets, prints, negatives, transparencies and slides maintained by Okanagan Helicopters Ltd and a collection of photographs compiled by chairman and president John Pitt that date from the mid-1960s to 1976. The proof sheets depict various operations and technical shots of Okanagan aircraft. The series encompasses the entire scope of Okanagan’s activities. Notably the series includes several images from Okanagan’s first flight in 1947, as well as photographs from the Kemano work site project in the 1950s and the 1970s High Arctic polar bear contract. Many of the photographs appear to have been taken across BC, including Vancouver, Prince George, Kemano, and Campbell River, as well as Inuvik in the Northwest Territories. The photographic proofs were originally in binders, and many were accompanied by a short index indicating where the images were taken and what they show.

John Pitts’ photo collection, which included several small envelopes of photographs, was comprised of numerous images of heli-skiing operations and general shots that are assumed to have been taken in BC during the 1970s. Also included in the collection are some general aircraft photos and several proof sheets for photographs taken of Pitts for the 1976 annual report. One group of photographs in Pitts’ collection appears to have been taken in England between 1967 and 1970 at the Autair Helicopter hangar, most likely in the vicinity of Luton Airport. Other images depict offshore drilling rigs that were most likely part of a 1970s operation based in Gander, Newfoundland.

Several of the photographs in the general photographic collection show evidence of use in newspaper publications, notably the Vancouver Sun, Prince George Citizen, and the Toronto Telegram.

Although the photographs demonstrate considerable overlap with other series, including MS-3180 MS-3188, MS-3189, MS-3190, and MS-3197 they have been arranged in this series as, due to the varied nature of the files, it would have been impossible to adequately arrange the images in other series.

Proof sheets originating with other companies can be found in MS-3178.

Photographs

The series consists of loose photographs and photograph albums collected by Bill Sloan, which relate to his professional career. The photographs primarily document Vancouver Island.

Additional photographs can be found interfiled with textual and cartographic material in MS-3341. The photographs in MS-3341 accompany textual records, such as reports.

Vernon County Court process books

  • GR-3507
  • Series
  • 1913-[195-?]

The series consists of one unindexed process book dating from 1913 to 1916 and two process index books. The indexes appear to be for much later records and likely date to the 1950s. A typical entry shows the date received, plaint number, plaintiff, defendant, nature of process, amount, court issued from, name of solicitor, date of return, nature of return and remarks.

British Columbia. County Court (Vernon)

Essays and accounts

The series consists of microfilmed transcripts of short essays on various subjects, including the transport and mining industries in B.C., the history of B.C., descriptions of Victoria and other B.C. cities by Cariboo grocer Leonard A. Coton. Also includes accounts of car trips taken by L.A. Coton to the Okanagan, the Cariboo and on Vancouver Island in the 1950s.

Promotional material

The series consists of brochures, photographic prints, note pads, glossy folders and advertisement colour keys used by Okanagan Helicopters to advertise services and equipment. The brochures, printed between 1968 and 1970, informed clients of the company’s acquisition of new aircraft.

The series also consists of promotional material for the Aerial Line Stringer, dating to the late 1950s or early 1960s, and the Helicopter Underslung Spray System (HUSS) Bucket, which was patented in 1969.

The series also consists of a file that purports to be publicity material from the 1967 Abbotsford Airshow. Although it is unclear whether this is correct, captions on the photographs indicate that at least one of the images may have been taken at an airshow, and some of the photographs may have been used for publicity purposes.

The series also consists of graphic material that was used in the production of advertisements. Included are two sets of colour key transparencies and related material for advertisements with the tag lines “Okanagan Delivers” and “The Universal Experience.”

Related ephemera, such as badges, decals, matchbooks, and a baseball cap were transferred to the department of Human History at the Royal British Columbia Museum. Blank orange promotional note pads have been retained with the archival material.
The series is organized chronologically.

Marketing strategy, research, and promotion records

The series consists of records resulting from the selection of advertising agencies and the promotion of bank programs. The series is comprised predominantly of advertising agency proposals and promotional materials for the Bank’s Pioneer Service Plan, MAX Automated Banking Machine, Western Account, Bonanza Account, and Scenic Cheque Programme.

Artwork and personal papers

Series consists primarily of Savery's artwork, including two sketchbooks, a design notebook, and three individual drawings. Also included in the series are two scrapbooks, primarily containing newspaper clippings (one of these scrapbooks is a photocopy created by the donor) and a file on the rose garden at Government House.

Miscellaneous recordings by Orchard

The series consists of miscellaneous audio recordings by Imbert Orchard, including interviews, actualities (i.e., live location sounds), production elements or sections of CBC documentaries and BC Archives sound programs, and a number of unidentified recordings.

Activism posters and flyers

Series consists of 20 posters of various sizes, some in colour but most are printed or copied with black ink only. Many of the posters announce events presented or sponsored by the Progressive Workers' Movement (P.W.M.). Numerous are protesting the Vietnam War.

Munday family photographs

The series consists of photographs primarily documenting the alpine and mountaineering activities of the Mundays, their friends, and associated clubs (especially the Alpine Club of Canada). The photographs consist of loose prints, mounted prints for exhibition purposes, albums, and negatives. The majority of the photographs were taken by either Don or Phyllis Munday, however some photographs were taken by other individuals and/or acquaintances, or, in some cases, the Government of British Columbia.
