This series consists of a wide variety of records received or created by government officials in the Cariboo region from 1868 to 1915. Most of the records are addressed to government officials or were created by courts in the following places: Richfield, Barkerville, Quesnelle Forks and other locations in the Cariboo district. Over the years, the government offices responsible for the entire Cariboo district were located in each of these towns. The majority of the records appear to have been received by the Government Office, Richfield.

At this time government offices held a very wide range of responsibilities which could be done by as few as one person. The records relate to several government officials: the Gold Commissioner, Government Agent, Magistrate, County Court judge and Supreme Court judge.

The majority of the records are related to leasing, purchasing or gaining access to water for mining claims. This includes some records from the Gold Commissioner court.

There are also many county court and supreme court records. These records include summons; wills; probate and other estate records; search warrants; assizes; court transcripts; evidence; coroner inquest records; assize court calendars; sheriff records; and notes of the Board of Liquor Licence Commissioners approving renewal of liquor licences.

Other types of records include general correspondence from settlers; census data; voters lists; voter registration forms from Keithley Creek; criminal statistics; Land Ordinances; pre-emption records and other records related to the Land Act; naturalization oaths; indentures; receipts and financial records; maps; petitions for liquor licences; a BC Savings Bank (Cariboo Branch) depositors book; and a register of letters inward and outward for 1910-1915.

The series consists of records created by Frederick Dally including correspondence and letters of introduction; notes on his voyage from London (1862), a trip around Vancouver Island on H.M.S. SCOUT (1866), a journey to the Cariboo and his witness of the Barkerville fire (1868), First Nations people of British Columbia, and various other topics; printed items relating to his training as a dentist and later life in England. Records are arranged into three thematic groups, correspondence, miscellaneous documents, and printed items.

This series contains the records of the Gold Commissioner, Government Agent, and Assistant Land Commissioner, Cariboo District (Quesnel). The records consist of lot registers, certificates of purchase, certificates of pre-emption, registers of pre-emptions (canceled and allowed), registers of land applications and lands purchased, register of leaves of absence granted pre-emption on active service, minute books containing lot register of lands along the route of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, and registers of hay and pasture land leases. The series also includes townsite registers for Quesnel, Barkerville, and Wells and lot registers for some townships in the Peace River Block. Volumes 89-98 and 153-158 are oversize.

The series consists of a microfilmed copy of a plaint and procedure book for the County Court of Cariboo, created between May 1907 and March 1954. The volume includes proceedings from sessions held at Barkerville, Soda Creek, Richfield, 150 Mile House, Quesnel and South Fort George, although the court appears to have settled at Barkerville after 1911.

The series consists of two cause books from the Small Debts Court in Barkerville. The first, in accession 75-G-053, was created between November 1933 and September 1940. This volume also includes proceedings under the Deserted Wives Maintenance Act. The series also includes a Sheriff's record book for the County Court of Cariboo, created between April 1895 and September 1899, listing summonses issued and served in Quesnel, 150 Mile House, Soda Creek, Richfield, Ashcroft Station and Clinton. The second Barkerville cause book, in accession 83-0774, was created between February 1941 and February 1950. It includes receipts issued by the Gold Commissioner’s office at Barkerville.

The series also consists of one ledger created solely by the County Court of Cariboo for small debts cases heard in Quesnel and Williams Lake. The cause book is arranged chronologically, but there is a loose alphabetical index included in the volume. Cases dating from 1921-1923 were heard in Williams Lake, and cases from 1925-1948 were heard in Quesnel. The spine bindings on this volume indicate that the ledger may have originally been in the possession of the the Government Agent of 150 Mile House.

The series consists of a naturalization index for the Cariboo District from December 1906 to June 1914, created under the Naturalization Act (RSC, 1906, Cap. 77). The entries in the index are by name and are arranged chronologically and alphabetically.

This series consists of a variety of financial records created by the Cariboo Government Agent and its successors from 1860-1948. Records are related to locations throughout the Cariboo and Chilcotin region, including, Quesnel (Quesnelle Forks or Quesnelmouth), Lightening Creek, Barkerville and Richfield. Records include collectorate cash books, waste books, records of payments of pre-emptions, assay office expenses, a mineral tax register, liquor sale records, a Bank of British Columbia bank book, a company stock journal, a tax assessment book, handwritten notes and invoices, and a list of arms borrowed from the Government Agent at Quesnelmouth. There is also a record book documenting supplies, equipment, memoranda's, and some records from the Lightening Creek Gold Commissioner's Court.

Collectorate books record the collection of various fees by the government agent. Such as trade licences, liquor licences, marriage licences, pre-emption records, water records, mining records, fines such as “Indian fines”, deposits and rent.

Personal papers; subject files consisting of newspaper clippings, notes of interviews, drafts of articles, correspondence, and photographs relating to LeBourdais' interest in the history of the Cariboo district. Louis LeBourdais was born in Clinton in 1888 and died in Quesnel in 1947. He was the son of Adalbert LeBourdais, telegrapher and postmaster at Clinton and Eleanore LeBourdais. Louis LeBourdais also became a telegraph operator. He worked in Kootenay and Okanagan districts for the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Dominion Government Telegraph Service, before settling in Quesnel, apparently in the early years of World War I, as telegrapher for the Dominion Government Telegraph Service. In 1937 he became an insurance agent for the Confederation Life Association. He was elected to the provincial Legislature in 1937 as the liberal member for Cariboo district, and was re-elected in 1941 and 1945. LeBourdais was keenly interested in the history of the Cariboo district and the Central Interior in general. He wrote and sold articles on the past history of the region and on current economic trends to a number of magazines and newspapers, and was a correspondent for the Vancouver Daily Province. His topics included gold mining and the "back to the land" movement. The records were accumulated primarily in connection with LeBourdais' historical interests. Records include: papers and newspaper clippings of general interest, and subject files arranged alphabetically. The subject files consist of newspaper clippings, handwritten and typewritten drafts of articles, notes of interviews, correspondence and photographs. The bulk of the records date from the 1930s and are concerned with old timers, mining, particularly the resurgence of gold quartz mining, and the "back to the land" movement. Some subject files contain photographs. Printed material transferred to the North West Library Collection is identified in the finding aid. Approximately 450 black and white photographs, 75 black and white negatives, and nine glass negatives of various subjects, and approximately two hundred lantern slides of the Cariboo-Barkerville area were transferred to Visual Records accession, 198501-11. Mining maps of the Central Interior of British Columbia have been transferred to map registration numbers: 12916-12928. A list of maps is available at the end of the attached finding aid. Series consists of articles, typescript drafts, essays, biographies, notes, clippings, etc. relating to Alaska, the history of British Columbia, historic sites in British Columbia, Indigenous people of British Columbia, the pelagic sealing industry, etc. The series also includes invitations to events and 124 black and white photographs, mostly of Smith's time in Japan and China.

The McKenzie Family collection consists of the business and personal papers of Kenneth McKenzie (1811-1874), his ancestors and descendants, including correspondence, notebooks, diaries, and other papers. It documents over one hundred and fifty years of family history. The collection is divided into those records relating to Vancouver Island (Boxes 1-19) and those relating to Scotland (Boxes 20-25). The Vancouver Island papers contain correspondence and documents pertaining to Lakehill Farm, the settlement of estates, official appointments, and other family matters. They also chronicle the organization and operation of Craigflower Farm and, to a lesser extent, the other farms operated by the Puget's Sound Agricultural Company on Vancouver Island. The Scottish papers document family events, relationships and property from 1779 to 1852. Included is an extensive record of the protracted settlement of the estate of William Blair (Boxes 22-23). William Blair was the father of Janet McKenzie (Blair).

Born in Edinburgh October 5, 1811, the son of Dr. Kenneth McKenzie (1786-1844) and Janet Blair (1784-1820), Kenneth McKenzie was raised and educated in the same city. Later he moved to his father's estate of Rentonhall, Haddingtonshire, East Lothian where he managed the operations. The estate was sold in 1851 and McKenzie, his wife Agnes Russell (1823-1897) and their six children emigrated to Vancouver Island in 1853. McKenzie had been hired by the Puget's Sound Agricultural Company to oversee the establishment and operation of Craigflower Farm near Victoria. In 1866 the family, now with eight children, moved to Lakehill Farm just north of Victoria. Kenneth McKenzie died there April 10, 1874. A comprehensive biography of Kenneth McKenzie by William R. Sampson is in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, X, pp.477-479. A rough genealogy of the McKenzie Family is provided in the hardcopy version of the finding aid.

Naturalization case files (1914-1959), plus three files of correspondence regarding naturalization applications (1944-1958) and one file of correspondence, circulars, regulations, forms, fee schedules, etc. from the federal government (1948-1955).

Fred Tregillus (F.J.T.) came to Canada in 1882, working on the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1886 he began prospecting and mining in the Barkerville area. He was active in public affairs, serving on the local School Board, the local Board of Trade, and the Local Exemption Tribunal. He was also Secretary of the Barkerville Branch of the Provincial Mining Association of B.C. He died in 1962 at the age of 99.

The records include: letters inward, 1909-1931, including letters from Cariboo Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA's), friends, and mining acquaintances and letters received as Secretary of the Barkerville School Board from teachers applying for positions.

This series contains records of the Deputy Provincial Secretary relating to the operations of the Ministry's branches. Many of these records deal with heritage conservation, museums, and cultural organizations. Records also deal with the administration of Royal Canadian Humane Association awards for bravery and life-saving.

GR-1661 is a pot-pourri of records accumulated by the office of the Deputy Provincial Secretary and by his various Assistant Deputy Ministers.The diversity of this collection is testimony to the multi- faceted operations and responsibilities of the Provincial Secretary's department.

A substantial number of the files deal with Heritage Conservation policies and heritage sites, such as Craigflower Schoolhouse, Barkerville, and Fort Steele.Many of the files also deal with cultural organizations and activities, with provincial fitness and recreation programmes, and with special interest groups.Other files in this unit pertain to the Royal Canadian Humane Association awards for bravery (which were coordinated by the ministry), to specific legislation re:the provincial flag, the provincial tartan, etc., and to the organization of out-of-town cabinet meetings.

Microfilmed collection of diaries produced by Wellington D. Moses the Black barber of Barkerville. The diaries in this series are from the years 1865, 1871, 1874, 1876, 1878, 1879 and 1880. These diaries were microfilmed in sequence with diaries and cashbooks held by the BC Archives, and can be located on reels A01046 and A01047.

Series consists of Schedule B tax assessment rolls created by Government Agents or other government officials for the Cariboo District. There are rolls for Barkerville for the years 1888, 1890, and 1892 (two pages) and one roll for Quesnelle [Quesnel] for the year 1890. The records include names, occupation, numbers of livestock, lot information, and assessments for real property, wild land, personal property, and income taxes as well as dates of notice, total assessed taxes, and provincial revenue taxes.

The series consists of a cash book, 1875-1879; a journal, 1876-1878 and an undated notice of a raffle to be held in Barkerville.
