Correspondence and contracts for public works projects

The series consists of correspondence and contracts between Surveyor General W.S. Gore, on behalf of the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works, with various contractors regarding three public works projects. The projects are the building of the Victoria Law Courts, correspondence and contracts from February to June 1887; Kamloops bridge, correspondence and contracts from March 1887 to February 1888; and Lillooet Bridge, correspondence and contracts from August 1887 to March 1888.

Series consists of one bench book for Colony of Vancouver Island Supreme Court of Civil Justice civil and criminal cases heard by Judge David Cameron at Fort Victoria from November 1853 to January 1856 and one criminal case at Nanaimo in May 1854. It also includes civil cases heard at Victoria in the Inferior Court of Civil Justice in 1856. The volume additionally served as a criminal record book for 1853, a cause book for 1856, and a Registrar's record book for 1853. It opens with a notation that Judge Cameron's commission was read and that he took his seat on 6 October 1853. The Registrar also notes that he received the court seal from Judge Cameron.

Financial records from Victoria's Supreme Court of Civil Justice. There is a receipt book, 1859-1964 recording payments made by Registrar Thomas G. William to suitors. The date, the number of the plaint, the "Full amount of judgment and costs" and/or the amount of cash received [pounds, shillings, pence] and the signature of the suitor receiving the money. In 1862 the format and handwriting changes. Registrar's account book, 1866-1970 showing daily entries of sheriff fees and court fees (in dollars and cents). A booklet of "Fees collected during the Circuit of 1870, 21 June to 26 August" marked Duplicate.

James Bay Athletic Association records

The James Bay Athletic Association [JBAA], the oldest Canadian amateur athletic organization west of Montreal, dates from 1886 (inc. 1890). Early records include: minutes, 1927-1930 and articles of incorporation 1927. Most of the unit spans the years 1966-1977 and includes: minutes, 1966-1978; reports; financial records; correspondence files; newsletters; team files and subject files. Also includes papers concerning the British Columbia Rugby Union [BCRU] and the Victoria Rugby Union [VRU] which became the Vancouver Island Rugby Union [VIRU] in 1976. BCRU files include reports, minutes (1968, 1973, 1976, 1977). VRU/VIRU files include reports, minutes (1965-1977), constitutions. The JBAA's athletic interests grew to include rugby, track and field, basketball, tennis, badminton, wrestling, Canadian football, soccer, lacrosse and ice hockey; eventually, however, interest in sports other than rugby suffered. Active in rugby to this day, the teams of the JBAA have compiled an impressive playing record. JBAA records include some early material: minutes, 1927-1930, articles of incorporation 1927, etc.; however, the bulk of the records span the years 1966-1977 and includes minutes, 1966-1978, reports, financial records, correspondence files, newsletters, team files and various subject files. Also included are papers concerning the British Columbia Rugby Union [BCRU] and the Victoria Rugby Union [VRU] which became the Vancouver Island Rugby Union [VIRU] in 1976. BCRU files include reports, minutes, etc., VRU/VIRU files include reports, minutes, constitutions, etc.

The series consists of a photograph album created in 1875, possibly as a presentation album for Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie, containing 54 black and white photographs taken by Charles Horetzky. The images were taken during the Canadian Pacific Railway Survey and are mostly of the Homathko River area. Each photograph is numbered and has a caption.

Diaries and other material

The series consists of diaries of George Lovatt, kept from October 1903 to September 1905, while he lived in Sandon and worked as a sawmill operator and timber and liquor dealer. There are also diaries from his retirement in Victoria, from January 1920 to May 1924.
The series also includes account books, from 1900 to 1906, of Lovatt's son-in-law Harry Nash, who was a plumber and tinsmith and operated a hardware store in Sandon.
