O'Reilly family records

The fonds consists of the diaries, correspondence, notebooks, survey field books, accounts, business and personal papers, photographs, watercolours, maps, and ephemera created by members of the O'Reilly family between 1830 and 1992. These records reflect the family's role as part of the inner circle of administrators during the colonial period and as part of Victoria's upper middle class, until the death of Peter O'Reilly in 1905. They also document the everyday activities and events in the life of the family. These records were previously catalogued at the item level in the Old Catalogue, primarily using classification A/E/OR3, and as MS-0412 O'Reilly family, MS-0248 O'Reilly family and MS-2086 Caroline O'Reilly. In 2001 the records were rearranged into a single fonds in preparation for a microfilming project. Records which belonged to the Trutch family (MS-2897), Edgar Dewdney (MS-2898), Weir family (MS-2896) and the William Curtis Ward (MS-2899) were removed from these collections and described separately.

Records relating to baptisms, marriages and burials

The series consists of copies of registers of baptisms, marriages and burials kept at Fort Vancouver, Fort Victoria, Fort Langley, and the Parish of Victoria. The original dates of the records are 1836 to 1886 while the photocopies and transcripts were probably made around 1950.

The first mission of the Church of England on the northwest coast of North America was established by Rev. Herbert Beaver when he arrived at Fort Vancouver, the Pacific Headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company, in May 1837. With the establishment of Fort Victoria, the Hudson's Bay Company employed Rev. Robert John Staines to replace Rev. Beaver who had resigned his Fort Vancouver post in 1838. Staines arrived in 1849 and initiated construction of Victoria's District Church in 1853. Unhappy with the company's land policies, Staines sailed for England in 1854 carrying the grievances of other settlers. His ship foundered and Staines perished. His replacement was Edward Cridge who arrived at Fort Victoria on 1 April 1855. With the issuance of an ordinance by Governor Douglas "establishing regulations for the arrangement of the affairs of the Colonial Church" Cridge could hold his first regular services in August 1856. An endowment of £25,000 from Baroness Burdett-Coutts provided for the establishment of the Diocese of British Columbia and on 12 January 1859 Letters Patent were issued creating a Bishopric and appointing Rev. George Hills as Bishop. His church was consecrated on 7 December 1865 and Edward Cridge was appointed Dean. In September 1869 the Cathedral was destroyed by fire to be replaced by a second wooden structure consecrated on 5 December 1872. This was replaced with the existing stone cathedral consecrated 28 September 1929.

Baptismal, marriage and burial church registers

  • GR-3258
  • Series
  • Microfilmed 1946 (originally created 1849-1903)

The series consists of copies of British Columbia baptism, marriage and death registers created by churches that conducted the ceremonies. Currently only records (baptisms 1849-1899; marriages 1864-1903) of St. Andrews Cathedral, Victoria , are available.

Churches were required to submit their baptismal registers to the Vital Statistics Division in the 1940s so the registers could be microfilmed. Vital Statistics subsequently created an alphabetical index to the microfilmed registers, and a database was created from the index volumes with supplementary information from the microfilmed registers added to the entries. This information is searchable via the BC Archives Genealogy database. The microfilm copies of the original registers may include some additional information or context that was not included in the database.

Each bound volume was created by one church. Each entry corresponds with one ceremony, but may involve multiple individuals. The entries within each volume are ordered chronologically and may be numbered. Every volume varies in the type and presentation of information included and may not be consistent throughout one volume. All entries include the date of the ceremony, name of individual(s) involved in the ceremony, and the name of the priest who conducted the ceremony.

Baptism register entries may also include name of child, date of birth, place of birth, sex of child, name and surname of father, name and maiden name of mother, residence of parents, profession of parents, religion of parents, name and surname of grandparents, religion of grandparents, and name and surname of godparents.

Marriage register entries may also include name and surname of groom, name and maiden name of bride, age of bride, age of groom, name and surname of their parents, name and surname of witnesses present, religion of named individuals, place of birth, and signatures of parties involved.

Death register entries may also include: death dates, cause of death, age at death, location of internment and information about the funeral ceremony.

Indigenous people are included in the registers (as Indians or Sauvages). Some Indigenous names are included. Many baptisms of Indigenous people were in groups and may only consist of a list of the Christian names the priest gave to the baptized individuals. Tribal or community affiliations may be included.

Some entries include the geographical location that the ceremony took place. This location may vary from the location of the church, as some priests travelled quite widely to conduct ceremonies.

Papers relating to Oliver, Gillespie and Graeme families

Records include material pertaining to three prominent Victoria families: the W.E. Olivers, the W.C. Wards, and the E.P. Gillespies The bulk of the textual records were produced by W.E. Oliver and are related to his career at the University of Edinburgh and his real estate investments on Vancouver Island, including the Cowichan Lake Hotel. W.E. Oliver's papers contain material regarding his friend Warburton Pike, author and adventurer. Oliver handled Pike's estate when he died. Also included is the correspondence of Oliver's future son-in-law, Erroll P. Gillespie, a soldier serving in World War I. His letters provide a good picture of a Canadian soldier's life in training camp and on active service in Europe. There are also letters from his brothers, Sholto and Ronald, from the trenches, hospitals and prisoner of war camps of World War I. The collection also includes Nina Woolliams' research notes on the Douglas Lake Ranch, which was owned by W.E. Oliver's father-in-law, W.C. Ward.

William Edgar Oliver immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1895. He had been at Edinburgh University, 1883-1890, and studied for the Scottish bar. His university papers provide information about his education and numerous extracurricular activities. He wrote stories and articles on politics for a local newspaper while he was in university and was active in many societies. When he arrived in Victoria in 1895 he entered into a law partnership with Gordon Hunter and Lyman Poore Duff. In 1896 he married Mary Eleanor Ward, daughter of the manager of the Bank of British Columbia, William C. Ward. They had one daughter, Beatrice Lydia Catharine Oliver (known as Catherine). She handled Oliver's business affairs after his death. Catherine married Erroll Pilkington Gillespie in 1921.

W.E. Oliver was active in local government. He was the first Reeve of the Municipality of Oak Bay for the years 1906-1908 and made an unsuccessful bid to be mayor of Victoria in 1911. He continued to serve in municipal affairs as Reeve in 1912, 1914 and 1915. Oliver had a wide range of investments, including real estate in the city of Victoria and surrounding municipalities and shares in a variety of companies. He also owned land in the Lake Cowichan area. He was part of the syndicate that developed Golf Links Park subdivision on Newport Avenue in Oak Bay and was involved in developing other subdivisions as well. His real estate and other investments are well documented through indentures, conveyances, financing, mortgages, balance sheets, share certificates, and other relevant papers.

Freemasons records

The first Freemasons' lodge in British Columbia was formed in 1860. Holding its 19 March 1859 charter from the Grand Lodge of England, the lodge was styled Victoria Lodge No. 1085 E.R. [English Registry]. It was followed by Union Lodge No. 1201 E.R., formed at New Westminster in 1861. During the colonial period seven other lodges were established on Vancouver Island and the mainland. The lodges were: Vancouver Lodge No. 421 S.C. [Scottish Constitution; i.e. chartered by the Grand Lodge of Scotland], established in Victoria in 1862; Nanaimo Lodge No. 1090 E.R. and Caledonia Lodge No. 508 S.C. (both formed in Nanaimo in 1867); British Columbia Lodge No. 1187 E.R. (Victoria, 1867); Cariboo Lodge No. 469 S.C. (Barkerville, 1867); Mt. Hermon Lodge No. 491 S.C. (Burrard Inlet, 1869); and Quadra Lodge No. 508 S.C. (Victoria, 1870). In October 1871 representatives from the various lodges agreed to establish an overall governing body for Freemasonry in the province: the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of British Columbia. Dr. Israel Wood Powell was elected first Grand Master. A new constitution, acknowledging both the English and Scottish rituals was adopted and affiliated lodges were renumbered in accordance with a separate British Columbia Registry [BCR]. Thus, Victoria No. 1085 became Victoria Lodge No. 1 BCR; Vancouver No. 421 S.C. became Vancouver Lodge No. 2 BCR, and so forth. The records of the Grand Lodge of British Columbia form the bulk of MS-0002. However, the collection also includes records of various affiliated lodges, correspondence of the Vancouver Lodge of Perfection (The Scottish Rite), account books of Masonic temple associations, as well as historical notes on Freemasonry in British Columbia. Because of its disparate nature, the collection has been organized and arranged under several distinct categories: I. GRAND LODGE OF BRITISH COLUMBIA Includes general correspondence (1852-1939), minute books and porch books i.e. attendance books (1868-1917), Board of Benevolence correspondence (1923-1938), applications for initiations (1953-1956), and financial statements (1936-1955). Also includes early records of Mt. Hermon Lodge (formed in Moodyville, 1869 and relocated in Vancouver, 1886). II. MASONIC ASSOCIATIONS Mainly correspondence, minutes, and financial records of Vancouver Masonic Temple Association (1910-1927) and Victoria Masonic Temple Association (1877-1962). These associations were legal entities having responsibility for the halls and meeting rooms used by the various lodges in Victoria and Vancouver. III. INDIVIDUAL LODGES A. Victoria-Columbia Lodge No. 1 BCR (formed by the amalgamation of Victoria Lodge No. 1 and British Columbia Lodge No. 5 on 29 Mar 1877) includes original correspondence and minutes of Victoria Lodge No. 1085 E.R. (1860) and British Columbia Lodge No. 1187 E.R. (1867); B. Vancouver and Quadra Lodge No. 2 BCR [Victoria] (formed by the amalgamation of Vancouver Lodge No. 2 and Quadra Lodge No. 8 on 10 Mar 1877) includes records of predecessor lodges, Vancouver No. 421 S.C. (1862) and Quadra No. 508 S.C. (1870); C. Ionic Lodge No. 19 BCR [Chilliwack] minute books, 1893-1958. [Transferred to Chilliwack Archives, Oct 2000]; D. United Services Lodge No. 24 BCR [Esquimalt] correspondence, minute books, etc., 1893-1960; E. North Star Lodge No. 30 BCR [Fort Steele] minute books, pense books, miscellaneous correspondence, 1899-1942; F. Tuscan Lodge No. 39 BCR [Trout Lake] minute and porch books, 1903-1921. IV. VANCOUVER LODGE OF PERFECTION (THE SCOTTISH RITE) Records of the Grand Secretary and Registrar: Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry (Valley of Vancouver), 1927-1945. V. MANUSCRIPT AND HISTORICAL NOTES ABOUT FREEMASONRY IN BRITISH COLUMBIA Manuscripts, indices, and notes gathered by John T. Marshall, Grand Historian of the Grand Lodge. Much of this material was used in the writing of Marshall's History of Grand Lodge of British Columbia, 1871-1970 (Victoria: Grand Lodge of British Columbia, AF & AM, 1971).
