Miscellaneous court documents, civil and criminal, at all court levels. Includes summonses, exhibits, warrants, orders, affidavits and sheriff forms, from Barkerville, Quesnel, Soda Creek, Richfield and Lytton.

Series consists of diaries kept for the years 1888 and 1901 covering the details behind organizing the Cariboo district election of 1888 from the original proclamation to the results and expenses accountability. Also included are entries to his duties as an assessor, collector, sheriff, stipendiary magistrate and returning officer for the district, together with local notes, weather reports and personal items.

The series consists of one ledger that includes both advance and refund information as well as balances from the Barkerville Small Debts Court. The first ten pages of the ledger appear to have been used by the Government Agent in Barkerville, and provide information on cash advances and refunds from 1941 to 1948. Many of the advances were made to police constables, and included in the ledger are several “Authority for Cash Advance” forms addressed to the Government Agent at Barkerville and signed by Sergeant T. R. Baker, who may have been provincial police sergeant Thomas Raymond Baker.

The second half of the ledger includes a list of receipts and disbursements for the Small Debts Court, presumed to be at Barkerville.

Scrapbooks: Volumes 1-2 (1928-1962) contain articles on the Company; gold in the Cariboo; the Company's founders O.H. Solibakke, Fred Wells and W.B. Burnett; and other items. Volume 3 covers the Cariboo Miners strike 1937, the British Columbia Chamber of Mines, health insurance, the Kiwanis and miscellaneous items (mostly 1937-1938). Volumes 4-6 are on the Company (1937-1941). Volume 7 deals with articles on the Cariboo Amalgamated Gold Mines 1933-1939 and the Cariboo-Hudson Gold Mines, 1936-1940.

Series consists of correspondence and financial records (1864-1870) of the Williams Creek Hospital; correspondence (1934-1935), patient summaries (1935-1936), and reports and proceedings (1935-1946) of the Royal Cariboo General Hospital Association.

In 1863 a typhoid epidemic raged at Williams Creek. In response to this epidemic, the miners petitioned the government for a hospital and in July 1863 the second Grand Jury, with Judge Begbie in the chair, convened at Williams Creek and requested government aid to build a hospital. The government made a small donation and the miners contributed enough so that Judge Begbie could lay the foundation log on 24 August 1863 in the presence of the Honourable Donald Fraser, Judge Peter O'Reilly and Thomas Elwyn. In October the building was completed and Dr. A.W.S. Black became the first resident surgeon of the Cariboo's first hospital. The hospital, most often referred to as the Williams Creek Hospital, was at Maryville, a little settlement across the creek from Cameronton. The original three room hospital contained a ward, kitchen, and doctor's office and served until 1891 when a more spacious facility was erected on a new site. The Royal Cariboo Hospital was the only one in the region and it operated continuously until 1925. A hospital was opened at Wells but proved too small from the outset and the old Barkerville hospital was reconditioned and reopened in 1935. The Royal Cariboo General Hospital Association was incorporated on 14 March 1935 with the aim of establishing, erecting, maintaining, managing and operating a general hospital for the treatment of all diseases of the body and for relief from sickness and injury. The hospital opened on 1 July 1935 and was destroyed by fire on 29 March 1936. The Hospital Board felt that circumstances did not warrant the re-establishment of the hospital, but the board remained in existence and managed hospital funds. The incorporation of the Royal Cariboo General Hospital Association was cancelled on 5 January 1950. MS-2566 consists of early records of the Royal Cariboo Hospital, correspondence (1864-1870), accounts (1865 - when it was known as the Williams Creek Hospital) and later records of the Royal Cariboo General Hospital Association, correspondence (1934-1949), financial records (1935-1946), members (1934-1935), some copies of patient summaries (1935-1936) and reports and proceedings (1935-1946).

Series consists of minutes of the board of management, May 15, 1935 - May 9, 1938; ledger, 1935-1936; financial statements, 1936-1939.

This series consists of three volumes of Richfield Magistrate's record books. Volumes are a charge and sentence book, 1862-1874; charge and sentence book, 1974-1978, containing licencing records kept by the court registry, 1878-1907; and a notebook, 1887-1914, recording Magistrate's court cases at Richfield, Small Debts Court cases at Richfield and some cases at Soda Creek and Quesnel.

This series contains letters inward to John Bowron, Government Agent and Gold Commissioner, Richfield, 6 June 1892 - 30 September 1894, 2 vols. Each volume contains a nominal list of correspondents.

Five letters to Jean Reid, formerly of Barkerville, B.C., 1945?-1947. 4 letters are from Fred Tregillus, written from Barkerville and from St. Paul's Hospital (Vancouver) and contain news of Barkerville people and of mining activities.

This series contains records of the Deputy Provincial Secretary relating to the operations of the Ministry's branches. Many of these records deal with heritage conservation, museums, and cultural organizations. Records also deal with the administration of Royal Canadian Humane Association awards for bravery and life-saving.

GR-1661 is a pot-pourri of records accumulated by the office of the Deputy Provincial Secretary and by his various Assistant Deputy Ministers.The diversity of this collection is testimony to the multi- faceted operations and responsibilities of the Provincial Secretary's department.

A substantial number of the files deal with Heritage Conservation policies and heritage sites, such as Craigflower Schoolhouse, Barkerville, and Fort Steele.Many of the files also deal with cultural organizations and activities, with provincial fitness and recreation programmes, and with special interest groups.Other files in this unit pertain to the Royal Canadian Humane Association awards for bravery (which were coordinated by the ministry), to specific legislation re:the provincial flag, the provincial tartan, etc., and to the organization of out-of-town cabinet meetings.

This series consists of 11 volumes of records of the Assistant Commissioner of Lands and Works, Cariboo District, 1863-1893. Records include certificates of pre-emption, certificates of improvement, lot register of Group 1, Cariboo District, sale of town lots of Richfield, Barkerville, Cameronton, and Quesnellemouth, and certificates of purchase. Also contains water rights recorded for irrigation purposes and an accounts book.

This series include a summary of pre-emption records cancelled in the Barkerville Assessment District. The series contains one volume of a register that contains the name and number of the pre-emption record, the lot number and acreage, and the date and cause of cancellation.

This series consists of a variety of records related to resource use and recreation management created from 1982-2002 by the Quesnel Forest District, a division of the Cariboo Forest Region. These records relate to the use and management of natural resources in the area, as well as recreation resources in Provincial forests. This includes trails and historical sites with value for tourism or other recreational uses. The records document the location, management, promotion and use of such sites.

The series includes the following types of records:

Local Resource Use Plans (LRUP) for the Barkerville and Blackwater areas. These plans are designed to resolve resource use conflicts in specific areas at the local level.

Resource management inventory files relate to the identification of the present and future opportunities from the Provincial Forest recreation resource, such as heritage trails. This also includes files on archaeological sites.

Resource management planning records relate to the establishment of recreation management objectives for the Provincial Forest recreation resource. Includes general information about types of plans as well as specific information concerning individual plans including: provincial, regional and district recreation plans, rivers and trails plans, cave or karst management plans, and historic (heritage) trail management plans.

Forest Service project site/trail files relate to the routine maintenance, rehabilitation and development of Forest Service recreation sites and trails. Includes records relating to the planning, designation, assessment, design and construction of recreation sites and trails.

Recreation brochures and maps were used to inform the public about forest etiquette, integrated resource management practices and field conditions. Also includes information about recreation signs and posters as well as general tourism information and notable sites in the area.

The series also includes procedures on the following subjects: recreation program implementation referrals; commercial use of crown forests; and resource management inventories.

Types of records vary widely, but can include correspondence, reports, studies, published material, photos, and maps.

Presentments of the Grand Jurors in and for the District of Cariboo East, July 1867. The report is submitted by J.H. Todd (foreman) to Chief Justice Begbie and reports on the Jury's inspection of the hospital, jail, court house, sidewalks and roads, fire hazards in town particularly the need for an explosives storehouse, the need for better trails to outlying creeks and the annoyance caused by an unnecessary number of dogs. Chief Justice Begbie responds to each of these points in his covering letter forwarding the presentments to the Colonial Secretary.

Series consists of a daily diary, April - September, 1910.

Naturalization case files (1914-1959), plus three files of correspondence regarding naturalization applications (1944-1958) and one file of correspondence, circulars, regulations, forms, fee schedules, etc. from the federal government (1948-1955).

Series consists of a minute book of the meetings of the fire brigade in Barkerville, 1884-1911. At the back of this single volume are lists of firemen attending the meetings and some accounts.

Personal papers; subject files consisting of newspaper clippings, notes of interviews, drafts of articles, correspondence, and photographs relating to LeBourdais' interest in the history of the Cariboo district. Louis LeBourdais was born in Clinton in 1888 and died in Quesnel in 1947. He was the son of Adalbert LeBourdais, telegrapher and postmaster at Clinton and Eleanore LeBourdais. Louis LeBourdais also became a telegraph operator. He worked in Kootenay and Okanagan districts for the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Dominion Government Telegraph Service, before settling in Quesnel, apparently in the early years of World War I, as telegrapher for the Dominion Government Telegraph Service. In 1937 he became an insurance agent for the Confederation Life Association. He was elected to the provincial Legislature in 1937 as the liberal member for Cariboo district, and was re-elected in 1941 and 1945. LeBourdais was keenly interested in the history of the Cariboo district and the Central Interior in general. He wrote and sold articles on the past history of the region and on current economic trends to a number of magazines and newspapers, and was a correspondent for the Vancouver Daily Province. His topics included gold mining and the "back to the land" movement. The records were accumulated primarily in connection with LeBourdais' historical interests. Records include: papers and newspaper clippings of general interest, and subject files arranged alphabetically. The subject files consist of newspaper clippings, handwritten and typewritten drafts of articles, notes of interviews, correspondence and photographs. The bulk of the records date from the 1930s and are concerned with old timers, mining, particularly the resurgence of gold quartz mining, and the "back to the land" movement. Some subject files contain photographs. Printed material transferred to the North West Library Collection is identified in the finding aid. Approximately 450 black and white photographs, 75 black and white negatives, and nine glass negatives of various subjects, and approximately two hundred lantern slides of the Cariboo-Barkerville area were transferred to Visual Records accession, 198501-11. Mining maps of the Central Interior of British Columbia have been transferred to map registration numbers: 12916-12928. A list of maps is available at the end of the attached finding aid. The McKenzie Family collection consists of the business and personal papers of Kenneth McKenzie (1811-1874), his ancestors and descendants, including correspondence, notebooks, diaries, and other papers. It documents over one hundred and fifty years of family history. The collection is divided into those records relating to Vancouver Island (Boxes 1-19) and those relating to Scotland (Boxes 20-25). The Vancouver Island papers contain correspondence and documents pertaining to Lakehill Farm, the settlement of estates, official appointments, and other family matters. They also chronicle the organization and operation of Craigflower Farm and, to a lesser extent, the other farms operated by the Puget's Sound Agricultural Company on Vancouver Island. The Scottish papers document family events, relationships and property from 1779 to 1852. Included is an extensive record of the protracted settlement of the estate of William Blair (Boxes 22-23). William Blair was the father of Janet McKenzie (Blair).

Born in Edinburgh October 5, 1811, the son of Dr. Kenneth McKenzie (1786-1844) and Janet Blair (1784-1820), Kenneth McKenzie was raised and educated in the same city. Later he moved to his father's estate of Rentonhall, Haddingtonshire, East Lothian where he managed the operations. The estate was sold in 1851 and McKenzie, his wife Agnes Russell (1823-1897) and their six children emigrated to Vancouver Island in 1853. McKenzie had been hired by the Puget's Sound Agricultural Company to oversee the establishment and operation of Craigflower Farm near Victoria. In 1866 the family, now with eight children, moved to Lakehill Farm just north of Victoria. Kenneth McKenzie died there April 10, 1874. A comprehensive biography of Kenneth McKenzie by William R. Sampson is in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, X, pp.477-479. A rough genealogy of the McKenzie Family is provided in the hardcopy version of the finding aid.

Ledgers, 1886-1900 and 1895-1898.

Series consists of articles, typescript drafts, essays, biographies, notes, clippings, etc. relating to Alaska, the history of British Columbia, historic sites in British Columbia, Indigenous people of British Columbia, the pelagic sealing industry, etc. The series also includes invitations to events and 124 black and white photographs, mostly of Smith's time in Japan and China.

This series consists of dossiers of photocopied historical material for theatrical application, including: 1. Barkerville, the Cariboo Gold Rush; 2, Fort Steele, the Kootenay Gold Rush; 3. Fort Steele, East Kootenay in the 1880's; 4. Fort Steele, East Kootenay, 1890-1905.

Fred Tregillus (F.J.T.) came to Canada in 1882, working on the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1886 he began prospecting and mining in the Barkerville area. He was active in public affairs, serving on the local School Board, the local Board of Trade, and the Local Exemption Tribunal. He was also Secretary of the Barkerville Branch of the Provincial Mining Association of B.C. He died in 1962 at the age of 99.

The records include: letters inward, 1909-1931, including letters from Cariboo Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA's), friends, and mining acquaintances and letters received as Secretary of the Barkerville School Board from teachers applying for positions.
