Volume 2 : Arbitrary land areas reports "H"

Appraisal reports of Government lands, Area "H" (reverted), in the Matsqui, Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, and Maple Ridge Diking Districts. Area "H" lands are all situated at or near St. Nicholas Station on line of the British Columbia Electric Railway, one mile north of the Village Municipality of Abbotsford, and on the Abbotsford-Mission Road. Lots are; 1-9, 9a, 10, 12, 17, 18, 20-31, 43-45, 47, 49-51, 51a, 52-59, in subdivision of District Lots 47, 206-209, 356, G.2, E.C.M., N.W.D.according to Registered Plan 2173.

Volume 1 : Arbitrary land areas reports "F", "E" and "G"

Area "F" [indexed] is situated at the head of Howe Sound within the Vancouver assessment district, and embraces the surveyed lands of the Lower Squamish Valley from tide water at Squamish Town site northerly for 10 miles to a point approximately one mile north of the confluence of the Cheakamus and Chee Kye rivers.

Area "E" [indexed] commences at District Lot 966, Thornborough Channel, Howe Sound; thence following the sinuosities of the shores of Howe Sound and Strait of Georgia approximately 33 miles to Turnagain Island at Secret Cove in the Strait of Georgia, the area having a average depth of three miles. These lands are in the vicinity of Hopkins Landing, Granthams Landing, Gibsons Landing, Gower Point, Roberts Creek, Wilson Creek, Serma Park, Sechelt, Half moon Bay, and Secret Cove.

Area "G" [indexed] embraces that portion of the east coast of Howe Sound from the north boundary of the Municipality of West Vancouver north to Squamish; the west coast of Howe Sound from the north boundary of Area "E" at Smiths Landing north to Squamish; Bowen Island and Gambier Island.

Maynard prints

File consists of 268 black and white photographs, negatives, and postcards. They were commercially produced by Hannah, Richard, or Albert Maynard and purchased by the Newcombe family, typically via Mrs. R. Maynard's Photographic Gallery. Images depict the Gorge, Victoria beach scenes, Esquimalt, Beacon Hill Park, studio portraits, houses, and other miscellaneous scenes. The original order of the photographs has been maintained.

Certificates of claim

The file contains certificates of claim for land in the Colony of British Columbia, numbered from 823 to 1388. Each scrip allows the entitled person to claim 20 acres of land within twelve months of issuance and to exchange it for a certificate of conveyance. The scrips are signed by the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works, Richard Moody are numbered, dated and made out to a person. They also include provisions to transfer the scrip on the back of the form and notes about the lots exchanged for the scrip. The scrips are made out to William Ross, John Hale, Hugh McRoberts and John Thorne, who may have acted as land agents.

Petition from Chief of Larawe

One petition from Larawe village to Governor Musgrave requesting Reserves be formally set aside and surveyed to protect their village site and cultivated fields from being stolen by settlers. The information on the petitions was recorded by Revered P. Durien in 1870, who then sent it to the Governor. The petition records several names and marks of individuals.

The petition includes annotations and comments added by the Governor and other government representatives, as well as a draft response approving the survey of a Reserve.

Petition from Chiefs of Fort Yale, Tsenes, Tsiam, Stectelen, Showamel, Twaous, Fort Yale, Choualp, Katlatle, Skokem, Skazir, Boston Bar, Spuzzum and Fort Hope

The petition provides examples of the Burrard Inlet, Shely and Fort Yale First Nations who had their cultivated land taken by settlers.

Lea Gillard's diary

The file consists of a small handwritten diary that was written by Lea Gillard, a United Church minister who worked about a coastal missionary boat, the Sky Pilot, in the 1930s and 1940s. The diary starts in 1935 and ends in 1939. The diary captures life aboard the boat that operated up and down the eastern coast of Vancouver Island. Gillard records day-to-day activities on the boat, such as ministering to the communities along the coast, dealing with repairs and maintenance of the boat, the weather, social events and family life.

Alongside the diary is a typed transcript that was done by the donor in 2022. This not only is a typed version of the diary, but also includes additional notes about Reverend Gillard as well as some photos.
