Bridge Patrol and Ferry Patrol

The item is a reel of unedited film footage. Shows the work of the Bridge Patrol and Ferry Patrol to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow on bridges and at BC Ferry terminals. Includes footage shot on Second Narrows Bridge, the Stanley Park highway, Oak Street Bridge, Lions Gate Bridge, Richmond freeway, and Tsawwassen ferry terminal.

Cascade highway : footage

The item consists of a reel of unedited footage. This reel appears to include footage from both the two reels of original reversal film. Shows construction work on the Cascade Section of the Southern Trans-Provincial Highway, between Christina Lake and Rossland. Also includes footage of a couple in a convertible driving to Rossland on a narrow, unpaved and dusty road.

China Bar tunnel

The item is a reel of unedited film footage. Shows construction inside the China Bar tunnel (including "pumpcrete" lining), and its highway approaches.

Deas Island tunnel

The item is a reel of industrial film. It shows the planning and construction of the Deas Island Tunnel, and its official opening in July 1959 by Queen Elizabeth.

Fraser Canyon slides

The item is a reel of unedited film footage. Shows construction crew assembling a Bailey bridge at washout site; washout damage to railroad bridge and line, road and culverts; bulldozer clearing debris; slide area and damage on hillside.

Gulf Islands via B.C. Ferries

The item is a film reel containing a television commercial. Promotes the new ferry service to the Gulf Islands. The newly-built ferry "Queen of the Islands" will provide service from Tsawassen to Galiano, Mayne and Saltspring Islands.

High-speed traffic footage

The item is a reel of film footage. Shot for engineering purposes, this footage uses single-frame or "time-lapse" cinematography, shot from inside a vehicle, to record automobile traffic. The first section appears to show the Squamish Highway going north. The section travels on the highway through West Vancouver, across Lions Gate Bridge, and onto Denman and Davie Streets in downtown Vancouver. The third section appears to have been shot on an interior highway south of Kamloops.

The item is a compilation reel of film footage showing Christina Lake-Kinnaird highway opening (06-Oct-1962); Deas Island Thruway; Deas Tunnel toll removal; Upper Levels Highway. Trans-Canada Highway Motorcade leaving ferry at Swartz Bay; ceremony at B.C. Legislature (Premier Bennett speaking); Trans-Canada Highway ceremony at Mile 0, Victoria, with motorcade car dipping its front wheels in the Pacific. Federal government opening ceremony at Rogers Pass summit; Prime Minister Diefenbaker speaking. Old Alexandra Suspension Bridge; new Alexandra Bridge under construction, and opening ceremony (23/24-Oct-1962). Also includes aerial footage of highway construction.

Highway on the sea

The item is a reel of promotional film showing the design, construction and launching of the B.C. Government ferries M.V. "[Queen of] Sidney" and M.V. "[Queen of] Tsawwassen".

Kelowna beach ; Game checking station ; Vancouver International Airport

The item is a reel of film stock shots. (1) People sunbathing on Hot Sands Beach in City Park, Kelowna. Aquatic Pool building visible in background. (2) Activity at a game checking station (probably the permanent one at Cache Creek). Game conservation officer checking hunters' firearms. Deer carcass tied to hood of car; hunter removing its lower jaw to turn in. (3) Vancouver Airport, showing runway [construction?] and airliners (Trans-Canada Airlines) at terminal building.

Kelowna Regatta ; Penticton Peach Festival

The item is a reel of unedited footage. Kelowna Regatta and Penticton Peach Festival activities and celebrations. Kelowna: Ogopogo Pool (a.k.a. Aquatic Pool?) and City Park; footage of parachute skiing, diving, swimming competition and water skiing; Regatta parade floats; buildings on Bernard Avenue. Penticton: children's parade; Square Dance jamboree events; Peach Festival parade floats; beach scenes.

Ladner ferry, etc.

The item consists of a reel of unedited film footage and associated workprint of water traffic on the south arm of the Fraser River near the site of the Deas Island Tunnel. Two sequences show the operation of the Ladner ferry, a car ferry service crossing the Fraser between Ladner and Woodwards Landing in Richmond. Shows cars, trucks, and buses boarding the ferry; crew at work on the deck and the bridge; views from ferry during the crossing; docking and unloading; etc. Also includes footage of the CNR rail car ferry S.S. "Canora"; a large floating dredge; and the sternwheeler "Essington". The latter usually operated out of Prince Rupert as a snag puller, but at this time she was replacing the "Samson V" on the Fraser; her deckhands are shown servicing a navigational buoy.
These sequences were found among the original footage and out-takes from the film Deas Island Tunnel (1957-1959).

Men, mountains and the challenge

The item is a reel of industrial film showing highway construction in BC. Includes planning and surveys; opening of contractors' bids by Highways Minister Gaglardi; clearing of route by heavy equipment; culvert assembly; drilling and blasting rock; road bed preparation; paving. Traffic control and overpass construction are also discussed. Sections of Highways 1 and 1A are shown, and Premier W.A.C. Bennett presides at an official opening.

Nine Mile Canyon bridge opening

The item consists of a workprint reel of film footage. Highways minister Phil Gaglardi cuts ribbon made up of various miniature flags at the opening of the Nine Mile Canyon bridge.

Overlanders Bridge opening

The item consists of a reel of original unedited film footage and a print. Shows opening of the Overlanders Bridge near Kamloops. A Western-style stage coach carries VIPs to the ceremony site. Premier W.A.C. Bennett and Highways Minister Phil Gaglardi are showing at the ceremony. A procession returns from the ceremony across the new bridge.

Patching crew

The item is a training film. Shows patching truck and crew, and depicts procedures used to repair cracked asphalt on the highway.

Peace River dam inspection

The item is a reel of unedited film footage. Shows construction scenes at Portage Mountain Dam on the Peace River. Highways Minister Phil Gaglardi visits the site.

Pitt River bridge : footage

The item consists of two reels of original Kodachrome unedited footage with additional film elements. Shows the construction of the Pitt River Bridge. Includes detailed coverage of all construction phases.
