Diaries

The file consists of 3 volumes of diaries kept by Israel Wood Powell. One is dated 1888-1889 and provides details of Powell's time in France, which he spent at Royat-les-Bains and the surrounding area. The other diaries are undated, but document Powell's activities in British Columbia. The two undated diaries name several Indigenous individuals and make note about Indigenous trades, artifacts, ceremonies, and day-to-day affairs. The diaries cover many parts of the province, including Fort Simpson, Quatsino, Chemainus, and the Nass River.

Remains of an ancient civilization on Vancouver Island

The file consists of a report written by James Deans regarding evidence of early habitation on the southeastern part of Vancouver Island. The last page of the report includes several rough pencil sketches of artifacts found by Deans elsewhere on Vancouver Island in 1870 and 1874. Pages 21, 22, 25 and 26 of the report are missing.

Recollections, 1975

Item consists of one album containing 41 diagram-style sketches in crayon and ink created by David Henry Norcross. Norcross was born in Granite Siding (or Granite) near Nelson, BC, and began his mining career at age 16. The drawings document his memories and history of mining and mining technology in British Columbia, particularly within the Kootenay district.

Contains an autobiographical history of Anderson 's activities with the Hudson 's Bay Company (1831-1854), and includes journals of trips from Kamloops to Fort Langley, 1846 and 1847; biographies of H.B.C. personnel; and a chapter on "Missionary enterprises for the instruction of the natives, schools, languages, etc." [285 pages].

Letters from Carol Pearson to Agnes Wilke

The file consists of two letters, February 20, 1963, and March 7, 1963, from Carol Pearson, King City, Ontario to Agnes Wilke in Sidney, B.C. The letters described Pearson's life, Emily Carr, and pets, particularly dogs and monkeys.

The file also contains three photographs; two snapshots of Emily Carr and her dogs, ca. 1933, and one snapshot of Carol Pearson on a horse, October 1951.

The file is a photostat copy of a pre-printed British register of baptisms, used to record baptisms at Fort Vancouver, 1836-1838 and Fort Victoria, 1849-1859. The volume is 41 pages, pages 1-16 record baptisms at Fort Vancouver and pages 17-41 record baptisms at Fort Victoria.

The information collected in the register includes the date of baptism, the name of the child, parent's names, abode, quality, trade or profession and by whom the ceremony was performed.

The file consists of a typescript extract or table (source unknown) of baptisms solemnized in the Parish of Victoria between 1859 and 1886. The file is number from p. 42-179, presumably following on from the previous register. Information collected includes the date of baptism, name of child, parent's names, abode, quality, trade or profession and by whom the ceremony was performed.

The file is a handwritten transcript copy of a register of marriages which duplicates the previous register, except that it has a few more entries. It records marriages at Fort Vancouver and the Columbia River, 1837-1838 and 1848-1849 and Fort Victoria, 1849-1859. It also contains marriages recorded at Fort Langley in 1851. The transcript contains 63 numbered entries, and whether the marriage was authorized by banns or license.

The information collected in the register includes the register number, place and date of marriage, names of the parties being married, the name of the person solemnizing the marriage and the names of witness.

The file is a typescript copy of extracted entries of marriages solemnized in the Parish of Christ Church in Victoria. The entries are arranged by original page number (20 to 69) and follow directly on from the register in folder 3 (and overlaps slightly with the last entries in folder 4).

The information collected in the register includes the register page number, place and date of marriage, names of the parties being married, the name of the person solemnizing the marriage and the names of witness, and whether the marriage was authorized by banns or license.
