Journal of Vancouver's voyage

The file consists of 2 photostat copies of 9 pages of Menzies' journal of Vancouver's voyage, 1790-1794. The pages cover the date range between April 1792 to August 1792 and are the portions that deal with Vancouver Island. C.F. Newcombe used roughly the same portion for his publication, "Menzies' Journal of Vancouver's Voyage."

Correspondence outward : letter to his family

The file consists of two letters written to his brother, James, and his mother, written on the eve before his departure for the Northwest Coast. The letter is written from H.M.S. Discovery, at Falmouth, on March 31, 1791.

Thomas New correspondence

The file consists of two letters written by Thomas New, on board the ship Daedalus, to his sister, Rebecca Coxen in Kent. The first letter is dated September 16, 1792, on board the Daedalus at Friendly Cove, Nootka Sound. The second letter is dated December 16, 1793, on board the Daedalus at sea. The Daedalus formed part of the Vancouver Expedition.

The first letter, from Nootka Sound, recounts a story of a Spanish boy found murdered on shore, surveying land, and encounters with Indigenous people. The second letter is incomplete, but appears to discuss sailing to Australia, including Sydney, Port Jacks, Lord Howe Island. The letter discusses taking convicts onboard from Australia as well as an Aboriginal man.

Journal of a trip from Vancouver to York Factory per HB Express, Spring 1847

The file consists of an original journal kept by Thomas Lowe during his trip from Fort Vancouver to York Factory in spring 1847. The party set out on March 24 and arrived in York Factory on 30 June. Lowe departed York Factory to return to Fort Vancouver in July 1847, arriving on November 20, 1847.

A transcript of the diary has been made and is housed in a separate file folder with the call number A/B/20.4/L95A.

Journal from Vancouver to York Factory with Express, Spring 1848

The file consists of a notebook written by Thomas Lowe in 1848 detailing his trip from Fort Vancouver to York Factory and back again. The expedition departed Fort Vancouver on March 24, 1848 and arrived back in November 1848.

The diary also includes a loose bundle of papers at the back that appear to cover the period September to November. These appear to have been Lowe's original working copy of the journal, as some of the earlier entries appear to have been copied into the larger notebook. Entries in the bound notebook end on September 10, and it is possible that Lowe never copied the remaining months into the leather-bound book.

Journal of voyage from Vancouver to Walla Walla and back, 1849

The file consists of several sheets of paper stapled together. They appear to have been removed from a bound volume. The journal documents Lowe's voyage from Fort Vancouver to Walla Walla, Washington between August and September 1849. Lowe subsequently made a note at the end dated San Francisco, 22 March 1853.

Journal of a voyage from London to Sandwich Islands and Fort Tako (North west coast of America) in the Barques Vancouver & Cowlitz

The file consists of one bound journal written documenting Lowe's voyage on the "Vancouver" and "Cowlitz" to present-day Hawaii and Fort Tako between October 1841 and April 1842. Lowe writes quite detailed daily entries. He appears to have kept rough notes and copied them into the diary at a later date; some of these notes appear to have been misplaced in March 1842 and Lowe was forced to write some of his entries from memory.

At the end of the journal, Lowe includes an abstract detailing the dates on which he passed significant geographic landmarks, including the Equator and Cape Horn.

Lists of credits and articles wanted

The file consists of three documents created at Fort Alexandria in 1831, 1832 and 1841. The first is a "list of Indian credits" dated February 12, 1831 which is a compiled list of names in alphabetical order with the number of skins credited to each. Names of Indigenous people associated with either the Fort George or the Chilcotin establishment are further marked. The second document is an indent for Post of Alexandria and the Chilcotins outfit, 1832. It appears to be an inventory of equipment and supplies for both. The third document is a list of articles wanted for summer of 1841.

The file consists of two inventories of equipment and sundry articles at Fort Babine, made in 1831 and 1842.

Men's orders

The file consists of private orders of sundry articles for the men working at the post, 1833-1834 and 1838.

Tariff and outfit inventory relating to Chilcotin Post

The file consists of two four page dockets. The first is titled "Tariff for Chilcotin" and is dated November 1, 1836. It contains a tariff of trading prices for Chilcotin Post. The second docket consists of a list of invoices of Hudson Bay Company goods delivered to James McIntosh at Chilcotin Post, including trading goods, medicines, stationary and stores. This outfit inventory is dated November 2, 1836 and is signed by Alexander Fisher at Fort Alexandria.

Thomas Lowe, account book, Columbia Department

The file consists of an account book kept by Thomas Lowe in the Columbia Department between 1842 and 1850. The volume appears to be a ledger, but the ink has faded to such a degree that it is nearly completely illegible.

Letter from Thomas J. Farnham to Secretary of War, Washington (copy)

The file consists a transcript copy of a letter from Thomas A. Farmham, dated January 4, 1840 at Oahu Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), to J.R. Poinsett, the Secretary of War in Washington. In it Farnham gives detailed information of the activities of the Hudson's Bay Company in Oregon Territory (present day Oregon and Washington). The letter is accompanied by a certificate issued by the Department of State on July 12, 1898, certifying that it is a true copy of a document from the files of the Department of State.

Fort Kamloops Journal

File consists of one journal kept by John Tod while employed by the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Kamloops between August 3, 1841 and December 19, 1843.

Correspondence outward : W.F. Tolmie

The file consists of transcript copies of letters written by W.F. Tolmie at Fort Nisqually between June and August 1848. The letters are to Peter Skene Ogden at Fort Vancouver. The letters relate to relations with the Catholic Mission, the Americans and the local Indigenous community.

Miscellaneous accounts

The file contains an invoice of goods forwarded from Victoria to Fort Nisqually in 1848 and three pages of accounts between the Government of Washington Territory and the Hudson's Bay Company, 1856-1857.

Inventory of sundry merchandise, property [...]

File contains loose pages from a ledger book listing inventories of property and goods held by Hudson's Bay Company in the New Caledonia district. The lists also include unsaleable articles, country made articles, country produce, new stores, horse appointments, articles in use, stationary, medicines, provisions, and live stock. The first six pages pertain to March 1836 and the last two pages list articles in use for February 1837.

Despatches from McLoughlin to HBC, London

The file consists of a transcript copy of a letter from John McLoughlin to HBC secretary William Smith in 1843 about McLoughlin's intention to retire. The file also includes a transcript copy of a 27 page letter or report identified as McLoughlin's last letter to the HBC as Chief Factor, Fort Vancouver. It is dated November 20, 1845 and is structured as a narrative report mainly to do with relations with Americans. It includes some copies of letters and reports received by McLoughlin.

Despatches from McLoughlin to Simpson

The file consists of a transcript copy of a letter from John McLoughlin to Sir George Simpson dated March 20, 1844. The letter takes the form of a report or despatches and includes some copies of letters and trading figures from 1843. The content of the report includes details about the murder of McLoughlin's son, trading relations with the Americans, men and equipment at the forts and other fort business.
