Suburban land sale receipts

The file contains suburban land sale receipts from various registers, for lots sold at Langley and New Westminster, 1860 to 1866. The records include the name of the purchaser, the date and the amount paid. In most cases, only the counterfoil remains. There are also a few miscellaneous cancelled timber licences and a mining licence at the end of the file.

The file contains a letter from ex-Royal Engineer William Haynes to the Lands and Works Dept. in 1870, requesting a military grant of land near the Fraser River, accompanied by a sketch map. The file also includes an agreement dated December 16, 1870, to supply goods and food to crew of the steamer "Sir James Douglas" with a list of associated costs.

The letters have Lands or Works file numbers written on them and were probably part of a larger series of Lands and Works correspondence.

Corr. inward from H.O. Tiedemann

The file contains correspondence from H.O. Tiedemann to the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works including a copy of a report and a journal of exploration made by Tiedemann in 1862 on behalf of Alfred Waddington of the country between Bute Inlet and Alexandria, to determine the best line for a trail. A transcript of the journal, probably made by Archives staff, is also included. There is also a letter from 1869 requesting information on coal land claims on Baynes Sound near Comox.

It includes applications and references to fill the vacancy at the Race Rocks lighthouse and other government positions as well as letters about roads and crown lands and drafts of reports and petitions for expenditures.

Certificates of claim

The file contains certificates of claim for land in the Colony of British Columbia, numbered from 823 to 1388. Each scrip allows the entitled person to claim 20 acres of land within twelve months of issuance and to exchange it for a certificate of conveyance. The scrips are signed by the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works, Richard Moody are numbered, dated and made out to a person. They also include provisions to transfer the scrip on the back of the form and notes about the lots exchanged for the scrip. The scrips are made out to William Ross, John Hale, Hugh McRoberts and John Thorne, who may have acted as land agents.

Applications to pre-empt

The file consists of applications to pre-empt parcels of land on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands from 1871 to 1872. Many are accompanied by sketch maps of the lots claimed and correspondence. The applications are in chronological order and have lands file numbers written on the first page. These file numbers have been crossed out and replaced with pre-emption numbers P239 to P413.
