The fonds consists of records created and acquired by W. Kimball Nichols between 1922 and 1967. The records include records created by his father, W.K. Nichols and consist of contracts, correspondence and reports from 1922 to 1929 of the Eagle Lake Spruce Mills Ltd. in Giscome BC. There is also a photograph showing a forest fire at Giscome BC ca. 1928. This company was managed by W.K. Nichols. The fonds also includes financial records of Beaver Pass Gold Placers of Wells, BC from 1951 to 1967. This gold mine was owned and operated by W. Kimball Nichols and W.E. North.

Nichols, W. Kimball

Earl Baity interview : [Orchard, 1964]

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Earl Shaw Baity recounts his coming to BC in 1920 to move to Prince George with his father, Nick Baity. He describes Prince George in the 1920s, and Quesnel as he moved there in 1922. There is a detailed description of the road to Quesnel and the ferry. After he arrived in Quesnel, he took up a homestead. He discusses the growth of Quesnel between 1922 and 1947. He describes Wells and Barkerville as well, and tells stories of Dr. Gerald Ramsey and Paddy Baker. Mr. Baity outlines the differences in the populations of Quesnel and Barkerville. TRACK 2: Mr. Baity talks about several pioneers including John A. Fraser and the growth of Quesnel since World War II. The interview concludes with a discussion about life during the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Joseph Wendle interview

Reports and certificates

The series consists of seven award certificates presented to the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company from the Vancouver Exhibition Association for mineral exhibits, 1932 to 1938. The series also includes three reports prepared for the company: two copies of a report on stream flow of Swamp river district February to June 1934 which includes maps and photographs, prepared by a hydraulic engineer; and two reports from June 1962 prepared by insurance agents regarding the company's insurance needs. One of these reports is accompanied by an engineering survey and consists of a site plan of the company's works.

Gold Quartz Hospital Records

The series reflects the administrative and general medical activities of the Gold Quartz Hospital. The materials are arranged into categories that reflect the nature of the records, with each group being arranged chronologically. All items in their respective folders remain in original order. These records consist of numerous surgery and x-ray ledgers, hospital admission records, and other general administrative records.

Photographs

The series consists of 154 black and white photographs of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company taken in the 1930's and 1940's. The photographs show buildings, machinery, construction, mine company staff and mining operations. There are 22 black and white photographs showing the Cariboo-Hudson Gold Mines buildings and site taken in the 1930's. The series also includes one colour photograph taken March 17, 1961 which shows the 1000th gold brick poured by the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company.

Nellie Baker interview : [Orchard, 1964]

CALL NUMBER: T0376:0001 RECORDED: Quesnel (B.C.), 1964-07-19 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mrs. Nellie Baker talks about her experiences in the Cache Creek, Ashcroft and Quesnel area, 1890 to 1910. Mrs. Baker speaks about her father coming to BC in 1864 and the story of her father and mother coming to Chilcotin in 1884 before buying Bonaparte Ranch near Cache Creek, where Nelly was born. She describes activity along the Cariboo Road; wagons, stages, stopping places and drivers. She speaks about life at the Cache Creek boarding school and her relations with the native children.

TRACK 2: She moved to a ranch between Spences Bridge and Ashcroft where she used to capture wild horses. She discusses the Little Mountain slide at Spences Bridge as well as the sheep and cattle on her father's ranch. She discusses her life after she was married in Ashcroft, as well as pack trains, memories of the famous packer Jean Caux ("Cataline"), Quesnel in 1910, and activity in the area. She mentions that her husband was a doctor.

She describes the social life and recreation of Wells and Barkerville; working outdoors, a story about eating wild parsnips, and rattlesnakes. She comments on bars and liquor and her upbringing and adventures on her father's ranch near Ashcroft. She talks about her marriage in 1907, the Mormons in Salt Lake City, more experiences with her husband, and horse racing. [TRACK 2: blank.]

This series contains the records of the Gold Commissioner, Government Agent, and Assistant Land Commissioner, Cariboo District (Quesnel). The records consist of lot registers, certificates of purchase, certificates of pre-emption, registers of pre-emptions (canceled and allowed), registers of land applications and lands purchased, register of leaves of absence granted pre-emption on active service, minute books containing lot register of lands along the route of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, and registers of hay and pasture land leases. The series also includes townsite registers for Quesnel, Barkerville, and Wells and lot registers for some townships in the Peace River Block. Volumes 89-98 and 153-158 are oversize.

Employee record cards

The series consists of employee record cards created by the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company between 1939 and 1967. The cards are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the employee and include the following kinds of information: name, nationality, occupation, date of birth, military service, , class of work engaged for, last employer, reason for leaving, dependents, address, name of contact in case of accident or illness, insurance number and record of service.
