The series consists of Provincial Police Inspector's files created between ca. 1918 and 1923. The files are numbered from 50 to 106 and are subject files containing letters addressed to the Superintendent, Inspector and Chief Constable. The correspondence relates to the Victoria Police District.

The series consists of records created by the Superintendent of Provincial Police between 1917 and 1929. The records relate to the Victoria district and "A" division and contain files relating to various acts including the Sheep Protection Act and the Poll Tax Act from 1917 to 1921; vouchers and correspondence re vouchers from 1917 to 1925; and vouchers and miscellaneous letters from 1928 to 1929.

The records include correspondence and other material regarding financial matters such as budgets, estimates, vouchers issued, revenue returns, bills, statements and receipts. The records also include correspondence and lists regarding stores, uniforms, equipment and supplies; vehicle reports and some colonial era records relating to Victoria and Vancouver Island police, prison, fire department and prisons.

Travelogue. Mainly recreational attractions of the island. Highlights Victoria and area, including view from steamship entering Inner harbour; streets and shops; Beacon Hill Park (cricket and lawn bowling); golf, riding and tennis facilities; harness racing; Thunderbird Park; Saanich peninsula farmlands; swimming at Thetis Lake. Also Island Highway and other areas, including Malahat Drive; making of Cowichan sweaters at Koksilah trading post; resort scenes at Parksville and elsewhere; Forbidden Plateau; coastal and river fishing; autumn hunting for game birds; brief logging scene. Also of interest: Friendly Cove village at Nootka Sound, and BC Provincial Police Highway Patrol.

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-08-08 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Cox recounts his family coming to Alberni; his grandfather worked at the Cape Beale Lighthouse in 1879; his father was the first Provincial Policeman in Alberni; his mother's father [Kirkpatrick] was the first blacksmith and came to Alberni in 1886. He describes Indian ceremonial dances he witnessed performed at Alberni in the longhouses; he discusses Indian culture and language. He recalls Alberni mills and logging the town; and schooling. TRACK 2: Mr. Cox continues his recollections about Alberni; transportation; the stage; railway; water transportation; doctors; miners; policing; automobiles; roads; Port Alberni; early settlers; and farming. He recalls his work on the CPR ships that went from Alberni to Victoria, stopping at Port Renfrew and Clo-oose. He talks about the telegraph trail and station at Bamfield; the wreck of the "Carelmapu"; stopping at Ucluelet and Clayoquot; the whaling stations.

This series consists of three volumes of record books from the Colony of Vancouver Island Police and Prisons Department, and later and Colony of British Columbia Police, 1858-1873. Records include an account book, 1858-1863 (contains also some fire department accounts); requisition book, 1859-1861; record of constable's clothing and advance warrants, police and gaol, 1866-1873.

Journals (4 vols.) describing his voyage from England around Cape Horn to Vancouver Island (last entry made at 9 deg. S. lat.), Jan - April 1863, his life at Chemainus and a visit to Victoria, Jan 1-14, 1869, his departure from Victoria and return to England via San Francisco and New York and the first part of his lengthy visit in England, Nov 1876 -June 1877 (vol. 1); his activities in England, Jul 1877 - Aug 1878, including visits to the Channel Islands and France and his return to Vancouver Island via Halifax and the U.S., Aug - Nov 1878 (vols. 2-3); his work on the CPR in the Fraser Canyon Jul 1882 - Oct. 1883 and his work as a constable at Chemainus, Oct - Nov 1884 (vol. 3). Vol. 4 contains humorous accounts by others of a visit by Mainguy to Leamington, 1878, his stay in Halifax, 1878, and a trip from Drynoch to Spences Bridge, Christmas, 1882.

The series consists of five files created or acquired by the Chief Mining Engineer between 1938 and 1955. The files include: an illustrated 1938 report on Zeballos written by T.W.S. Parsons, Assistant Commissioner of the B.C. Police; a distribution list for a 1942 report on iron and steel; an illustrated copy of a 1948 report of Canadian National Railways on use of coal from Hasler Creek, B.C. in railroad locomotives; correspondence relating to the 4th Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress and other staff matters from 1947 to 1950 and correspondence re Alaska Pine and Cellulose operations in Peace River district, 1955.

Daily diaries kept by Maitland-Dougall as Chief Constable at Duncan, August 1, 1892 - January 31, 1897, and at Hazelton Police District, August 10, 1909 - May 8, 1911 (folders 1 and 2); notebooks kept as Stipendiary Magistrate, Duncan, October 25, 1916 - August 20;, 1923, August 21, 1923 - December 14, 1926, and June 11, 1931 - March 19, 1932 (folders 3-5). Loose correspondence and clippings re Maitland-Dougall's retirement removed from folder 5 and filed in folder 6 with loose material such as reports, correspondence and tailor's bill removed from other folders. Commissions as Police Magistrate, Cumberland, and Stipendiary Magistrate, Counties of Nanaimo and Victoria, (folder 7).
