Bill of lading and land receipt

The file consists of two items: a bill of lading for the steamer Beaver, under Captain William Brotchie, to ship goods from Fort Nisqually to Camosun, dated 20 June 1843 and a receipt from the Vancouver Island Colonial Surveyor for 98 acres of land in Cowichan district, 1858.

Carl Timms interview

CALL NUMBER: T2195:0001 PERIOD COVERED: 1900-1940 RECORDED: [location unknown], 1976-06-22 SUMMARY: Carl Timms was born in Ontario in 1889. Came to Vancouver as a child. Worked in the CPR office, New Westminster. Joined the "Beaver", a sternwheeler which ran up the Fraser River. Remembers CPR Pier D, Captain J.W. Troup, the north coast before the railway to Prince Rupert, the "Princess Royal", New Westminster Lumber Mills, competition between steamboats on the Fraser River in the early 1900s, the Timms Printing Company which was his uncle's business. Worked on the CPR railcar barge and later became clerk to the Engineering Superintendent. When he was a boy his grandmother would invite apprentices from the sailing ships up to their house for dinner.

Describes tree nailing. Worked for Hind Bros. -- managers of privately owned tug boats. Steam conversion to diesel. "Commodore", "Lorne", worked at Terra Nova cannery when he was a boy. Tin cans, Chinese workmen, built sailing boat. C. Gardner Johnson.

Harry Roberts and Marjorie Roberts interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1963-05-24 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Harry Roberts recalls his arrival in Vancouver in 1900; his grandfather, who founded Roberts Creek; the Vancouver Yacht Club; the HBC ship "Beaver"; the original Woodward's store; his uncle Bill Roberts; his impressions of his visit to Victoria in 1903; his move to Roberts Creek in 1910; his life there for twenty-five years; his work as a postmaster; and an anecdote involving a lady and an umbrella. TRACK 2: Harry Roberts discusses why he left Roberts Creek for Nelson Island; a description of his boat "Chack Chack I"; a voyage in it to Nelson Island; building his home at Pender Harbor on Nelson Island; a series of anecdotes involving his home and visitors; and Harry's next boat, "Chack Chack III".

Throughout this interview a woman, who may be Marjorie Lillian Roberts, prompts Mr. Roberts' memory with several questions and suggestions.

SUMMARY: The second of three radio documentaries about early Vancouver, combining narration with reminiscences from older residents. "Vancouver Around 1890" includes discussion of the following: the eviction of the Squamish people from the Lumbermen's Arch section of Stanley Park, recalled by Chief August Jack Khahtsahlano; the ceremonial opening of Stanley Park and descriptions of native burial sites, recalled by Sam Walker; the grounding of the HBC ship "Beaver", described by Captain Jack Canessa; Sam Walker on the building boom of 1887; and Reuben Hamilton on the "old" Westminster Highway in Vancouver's wilderness setting, and the Woodward's Block.
