Emily Carr in van in Metchosin

The item consists of one black and white photograph of Emily Carr. The image shows Carr’s caravan, her dog in her arms, and some of the paraphernalia she took with her on her outdoor painting expeditions.

The photograph was taken in Metchosin on July 2, 1936, by Helen Hembroff Ruch. Helen is the sister of Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher, who documented the visit to “The Elephant” by the three Hembroff sisters and the taking of the photograph in her biography “Emily Carr: The Untold Story”, published in 1978. The photograph is reproduced in this book.

The photograph had been framed with a backing mat (now detached but kept with photograph). The mat has handwritten notes that provide details of when and where the photograph was taken. The notes on the mat were probably written by Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher. One note states: “Photograph taken by Helen Hembroff RUCH, never reproduced (before my book was published in 1978)”.
