Article : "My Friend, Emily Carr"

"My friend, Emily Carr" is an article written by Edythe Hembroff Brand (later Schleicher) after Emily Carr's death. It predates her manuscript for "M.E.": "A portrayal of Emily Carr" which was accepted for publication by Oxford University Press in 1951, but not published until 1969 by Clarke Irwin Company, Toronto.

The file consists of two letters, February 20, 1963, and March 7, 1963, from Carol Pearson, King City, Ontario to Agnes Wilke in Sidney, B.C. The letters described Pearson's life, Emily Carr, and pets, particularly dogs and monkeys.

The file also contains three photographs; two snapshots of Emily Carr and her dogs, ca. 1933, and one snapshot of Carol Pearson on a horse, October 1951.

Letters to Paula Blanchard

The file consists of photocopies of two letters written by Nancy Martin of Los Gatos, California in 1989, to Paula Blanchard, author of "The life of Emily Carr", Vancouver, B.C. 1987. In them, Martin explains the relationship of Emily Carr to the Hayes family. Nancy Martin is the great granddaughter of Elizabeth Hayes Martin, referred to as "Auntie" by Emily Carr in "The book of Small".

Miscellaneous letters relating to Cridge family

The file contains a photocopy of a letter from Mary Cridge to her sister-in-law, Elizabeth, written from the Marquis of Bute ca. 1855 (including a transcript copy); a photocopy of a letter from Harold W.H. Helby to Emily Carr, June 1944, in which he describes being in Victoria as a midshipman in 1882 and visiting the Cridge family and a photocopy of an Archives pioneer form for Bishop Cridge filled out by Maude Cridge.

Photographs are of a painted portrait, memorial to Robert Burns in Beacon Hill Park, Nan Cheney and Emily Carr, Architectural Museum in London, Mark Hopkins mansion in San Francisco, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Carr (BC Archives reference number HP024834, A-9184)
