[Women's rally]

News item. Women's rally at the Legislature. Placards read: "Sexism is a social disease" and "Sexism affects the mind." Bob McClelland, Minister of Health, is interviewed. He has been presented with a brief which outlines health concerns of women. Unidentified women speakers talk about health rights of women (poor sound) and the need for more day care centres.

[Wolfe -- economy]

News item. B.C. Finance Minister Evan Wolfe says that for the first three months of 1976, "Government operations will show a substantial deficit at year end." He notes that for the first three-month period, revenue is down 3.5 percent while spending is up by 0.9 percent. The government had hoped to have a balanced budget for this period. There is already a serious cash shortage of $33 million. The projected budget deficit will be $125 million for 1976. The government may have to make "drastic cuts in expenditure" if the economy does not pick up.

"British Columbia financial and economic review": At a press conference, Evan Wolfe, BC's Minister of Finance,says that the "budget for the previous year . . . was excessive, and in the amount of $3.2 billion dollars, an increase of 50 percent over the previous year." He adds, "The revenues put forward to balance that budget were simply not attainable."

News item. Forestry official explains how a water bomber is used to fight forest fires. Shots of it in the air and picking up water by skimming lake surface. A few interior details are shown. A small, controlled fire has been set on the Malahat so that the water bomber pilot can demonstrate a water drop right on target. Lots of footage; some sound on film, but mostly background sound.

[Wallace session]

News item. Conservative MLA Dr. Scott Wallace talks about high BC unemployment and the Socred budget introduced in March. He says it's "excessively punitive in the tax increases that were implemented." Wallace feels that Socreds should now prepare an interim budget and "roll back" some of the tax increases to stimulate the economy.

[Wallace resigns]

News item. MLA Scott Wallace says that his main reasons for resigning are: (1) "Lack of success in getting the Conservative party moving"; and (2) "Failure of my leadership to capitalize on the fact the we've got polarized parties in British Columbia -- two main political groups. Yet many of the voters are looking for something in the middle, and I was trying to fill that void." Farewell speech follows, with regrets voiced by NDP House Leader Dave Barrett, who says: "He is the kind of person that we would all like to see come into public life, regardless of party." Wallace will continue as MLA.

[Victoria's Chinatown -- Chinese culture]

News item. Part 3 of a 7-part consecutive series on Victoria's Chinatown. Representatives from Chinatown explain some aspects of Chinese culture, both here and in China. A meeting of these men would probably be equivalent to our Chamber of Commerce or city council, except that all members are Chinese. This "council" has very firm roots and it is responsible for a smooth-running Chinese community.
